BCB President Hilbert Foster received sponsorship cheque and Trophy from NBS Manager Rana Persaud in the presence of other staff members.
Overs Second Division Tournament. The New Building Society would be pumping over $800,000 into the Tournament which is by far the largest cricket tournament in the Caribbean with ninety teams playing on the Round Robin basis. The simple launching ceremony took place at the NBS, New Amsterdam Branch on Friday last.
BCB President Hilbert Foster hailed the renewal of the tournament for another year as another red letter day in the rapid development of Berbice Cricket over the last fourteen months. The Tournament is the 41st major tournament to be launched since Foster was elected President late February 2018. Foster stated that the 2018 edition was completed in a record of seven months despite a break of three months for rain and committed the Berbice Cricket Board to completing the 2019 edition by December unless there is a lengthy delay due to an excessive rainy season. Rose Hall Town Bakewell defeated D’Edward Cricket Club in the 2018 finals at Albion Community Centre Ground by close to 80 runs to lift the NBS Title for the second time.
Foster stated that the 40-Overs event was the premier Second Division Tournament with Clubs also involved in 100 Balls and 20/20 leagues at the Internal Zone levels. The main objectives of the NBS is to promote the game of cricket at the grass root level in every Berbice Village, to expose new talents, to allow elder players to play and to allow younger players to interact with experienced payers on the field and in the dressing room. Most of the Teams have players between the ages of 26 to 40 years, while 40% of the Players are juniors. One of the New Rules for this year tournament would make it compulsory for every team to play a maximum of two Under-19 Players (born on or after the 1st September, 2000). Under-19 Players are not considered First Division Players in Berbice.
Teams to participate in this Edition of the Tournament would include Blairmont Community Centre, Achievers Cricket Club, D’Edward Cricket Club, Cotton Tree Die Hard, Bush Lot United, Bush Lot Rising Star, Police Cricket Club, Edinburgh Warriors Cricket Club, East Bank Blazers, Tucber Park Cricket Club, Young Warriors, Rose Hall Canje Welfare, Mt Sinai Cricket Club, Mental Hospital Cricket Club, Guymine Cricket Club, Kildonan Cricket Club, Whim National, Rose Hall Town Bakewell, Port Mourant Cricket club, Albion Community Centre. Tamarind Root, Toopoo Cricket Club, Fyrish Cricket Club, No. 72 Cut and Load Cricket Club, Dukestown Cricket Club, Skeldon Titans Cricket Club, Crabwood Creek All Family Cricket Club, No. 64 Fighting Marines and No. 48 Challengers Cricket Club.
The Teams would be divided into eighteen Zones with the top one from each zone advancing to the Playoffs and then Quarterfinal. Foster hailed the long standing relationship with New Building Society and stated that the Financial Institution’s sponsorship was vital to the continued development of the game in both Regions 5 and 6. With players like Kevlon Anderson, Kevin Sinclair, Adrian Sukwah, Kevin Umroa, Garfield Benjamin, Nigel Deodat, Seon Glasgow, Devon Clements, Sasenarine Sukhu expected to play, Foster is confident that the popular tournament to be very competitive.
Special thanks were extended to the Company’s Board of Directors. Persaud in brief remarks stated that the New Building Society was pleased with its relationship with Berbice Cricket. The Tournament over the years has been well organised, while every cent of the investment over the years has worth it, Persaud stated as the New Building Society event is very popular among the teams. Persaud expressed confidence that the 2019 edition would be another successful one.
The winning team would carry home $100,000 and the NBS trophy, while the Runner-up would get a $50,000 prize along with a trophy.
