On a day when rain was in the forecast, the sun shone in all its brilliance and it took Demerara just 5.4 overs yesterday to complete an emphatic nine-wicket victory against Essequibo at Bourda in the opening round of the Hand-in-Hand 3-Day Inter-County U-19 cricket tournament.
Essequibo resumed the final day on 155-9 and overnight batsman Amit Persaud added two to his 14 before Marvin Benjamin was removed for a duck by Pradesh Balkisoon off the first ball of the day’s second over as Essequibo were bowled out for 156 after collapsing from 132-2.
Man-of-the-Match, off-spinner Joel Spooner, followed up his 5-10 in the first innings with 6-55 from 23 overs for a match haul of 11-65. Balkisoon finished with 4-22 from 10.1 overs for Demerara, set 25 to win.
The home side reached 25-1 from 4.3 overs after Persaud, who enjoyed an excellent game, trapped Andrian Hinds (2) at 12-1 to finish with seven wickets in the match. Robin ‘Manage’ Williams smashed four boundaries in his unbeaten 18 including back-to-back fours off Persaud before Windies U-16 Skipper Sachin Singh (5) ended the contest with a magnificent cut off pacer Elian
Whyte which raced across the heavy outfield to the point boundary.
The predicted down pour did come around noon but by then Demerara were already celebrating their win. Scores: Eeesquibo 75 and 156; Demerara 207-9 innings closed and 25-1. The spinners from both teams dominated on the spin-friendly track as Demerara’s Alphius Bookie with 52 and Essequibo’s Orlando Jailall with 27 and 60, reached half-centuries.
Williams made 42 and 18 not out and Kevin Christian made 49 and shared in a 110-run opening stand with Jailall for Essequibo but no other batsman on either side, reached 20 with many of them throwing their wickets away due to a lack of patience.
The second round is scheduled from tomorrow to Monday and Demerara plays the U-17s at Bourda while Essequibo face defending champs Berbice at Everest. Both games are set to start at 10:00hrs.
Meanwhile, according to Manager of the Demerara team, former Guyana First-Class batsman Rohan
Sarjoo, he is satisfied with his team’s overall performance in their first game. “Yes I am satisfied with our performance in this game. Having said that we need to work a bit on the fast bowling and batting” said the 40-year-old Sarjoo.
Sarjoo, who made 21 and three in his only Regional First-Class game in 1996, informed that he was also satisfied with the general standard of the players in the match.
“We should have a practice session here (Bourda) tomorrow (today) afternoon after school to work on the little areas of concern. But we plan to approach the next game (tomorrow) in much the same manner as we did this one” disclosed Sarjoo who confirmed that Demerara Captain and West Indies U-19 left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd missed the second day on Wednesday due to illness but has recovered and was the ground yesterday.
“We were told that food poising was suspected but the medical report indicated that young Nedd was affected from an allergic reaction to something he had probably ate but food poisoning was ruled out” Sarjoo explained.
