Residents of Region Ten are expected to benefit tremendously following the construction of a night shelter come 2019. This is according to Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally.
This new night shelter seeks to provide a place of refuge for the region’s homeless. While the ministry is known for its night shelter reintegration programme across the capital, a shelter in Region Ten would be a great facet to communities, Minister Ally said.
Homelessness in developing countries like Guyana has posed a major problem socially and economically. Mental health illnesses in society’s perception, however, have been pegged as a major contributing factor to homelessness in persons across Guyana.
According to global reports, the number of homeless persons worldwide is estimated to be over one hundred million. Many of these homeless people, however, were said to be lone men, both young and old.
Further, homeless persons loitering on the streets have acted as deterrents to many countries’ tourism industry; this ill has also stymied the growth of countries’ economies due to the loss of human resources in the workforce.
The ministry’s night shelter initiative is expected to greatly affect Guyana through the reintegration and utilization of human resources that have gone unnoticed.
Countries in the Caribbean depend heavily on tourism and Guyana in awakening its tourism industry may see homelessness as a major hindrance in achieving its goal. A night shelter in Region Ten is just one of the many steps towards eradicating homelessness across Guyana.
The common perception that many persons have of homeless persons within Guyana is that they are mentally unstable, unemployed and drunks. However, it does not negate the fact that persons are homeless due to inadequate housing.
In addition, the ministry has embarked on many mobilization ventures in the course of 2018 to combat economic depravity.
Just over a thousand citizens are now benefitting from the Ministry of Social Protection’s Sustainable Livelihood Entrepreneurial Development (SLED) programme. This is according to the Minister of the said ministry, Amna Ally.
The programme, created within the pretext of generating income for citizens through self-reliance projects, and skill acquisition, has targeted 227 households in just this year. Some 1,260 four persons have been impacted by the ministry’s programme.
Thirty-three projects have been completed this year.
