BK International Incorporated awarded work
The third Phase of the construction of a Synthetic track at Burnham Park, New Amsterdam, Berbice is about to commence after Construction Company BK International Inc was awarded the $141.86M contract. The entire contract is estimated to cost $176M. Twelve bidders showed interest in the project.
This third phase is expected to involve demarcation, land clearing, laying of drainage pipes, inner and outer track works and asphalting, and is scheduled to take some four months to complete.
With the completion of Phase 3, only Phase 4 will remain in the four phase project. Phase 4 entails the laying of the synthetic track and is estimated to take approximately 21 days.
Phases 1 and 2 for the project were completed earlier in the year and were undertaken by German Company BSW Regupol.
The synthetic track in Berbice will be one of only three such facilities across Guyana. The only established synthetic track facility in the country is situated at, Leonora, West Coast, Demerara, which was commissioned in April 2015.
The other synthetic track is being constructed simultaneously at the Bayroc Community Centre ground in Wismar, Linden.
When completed the tracks will be 400M in dimension and outfitted with eight-lanes.
During the run up to the third stage the Ministry Of Social Cohesion with responsibility of Culture Youth and Sports which is overseeing the projects led by Minister Dr George Norton held extensive consultation with residents in the New Amsterdam/Canje and surrounding areas.
The project is slated for December/January 2019 completion.
Minister George Norton who had spoken of his Ministry having an open door policy had spoken of the importance of having suitable facilities for athletes to perform at their best, and stated that the completion of the facility as being a big step for Region Six.
The famed Burnham Park facility, which was named after the first Executive President of Guyana Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, sits on an estimated 10 acres of land. Things like the drainage, taking care of waterlogging, flooding, the positioning of various amenities like stands and such like were looked at during the first two phases which took care of the consultancy and planning.
When completed the track is expected to be similar to the dimensions of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany. It will also have all facilities to host International Track and Field events.
A full size football field will be constructed on the inside of the track, while efforts will be made to construct other games areas, stands and other necessities according to the availability of space and funds.
The project is being funded by the Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Social Cohesion, Culture Youth and Sports and The Ministry of Education. (Samuel Whyte)
