GFF Elite League season 3…Tigers, Conquerors win latest matches-Defending Champs GDF in action tonight on home turf

Western Tigers’ quartet that gave them a 4-1 win GFC to move to the top of the points table.

The latest round of action in season three of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League at the GFC ground on Friday last, sawWestern Tigers beating Berbice’s New Amsterdam United 2-1 and Fruta Conquerors whipping Milrock FC of Linden 4-1.
Tigers’ fifth win pushed the West Ruimveldt based unit to the top of the points table with 16 points from six matches, while Conquerors moved to second with 15 points from six games.
In the curtain raiser, the dominant Western Tigers, with National players Daniel Wilson, Hubert Pedro and Colin Nelson in their line-up, got the better of the team from Guyana’s oldest Town with Nelson leading the way with a brace. Leonardo Adams scored the consolation for NA United from the penalty spot.
In the game starting at 20:00hrs, City side Conquerors, led by goals from the quartet of Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, Dennis Edwards, Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams and Anthony Benfield, helped their team hammer Milrock, whose only goal came off the boot of Colin Beckles.

Colin Nelson scored both goals for Western Tigers on Friday night.

Watched by a fair turn-out in cool conditions under a clear night sky, Tigers jumped on their prey in the third minute when Nelson collected a pass about 35 yards from goal and found the back of the net with a powerful left-footer.
Tigers got the better of the early exchanges on a fairly fast pitch, and dominated ball possession with most of the football being played in NA United’s half.
Nelson scored again in the 37th from inside the box when he weaved his way around the defenders and at the break the score was 2-nil.
The second stanza saw an increase in the intensity of the Region Six side, while both teams wasted good opportunities to score with the Tigers, in particular failing to finish with shots that sailed harmlessly over the goal.
While the Berbice Custodian Tierre Phillips made some good saves the Tigers Goalie was beaten by Adams from the penalty spot in the 66th minute and despite several raids on Goal the game remained 2-1 when the final whistle was blown.
The game between Fruta Conquerors and Milrock was more fast-paced and like in the first game, the Georgetown side dominated proceedings against the lads from the hilly, sand and clay region.
Boasting seven players in their side who have represented Guyana, Richardson, from the left flank and Abrams from the right, had the Milrock defenders busy in a contest in which tempers flared on a few occasions.
Richardson, the 35-year-old Guyana forward, found the back of the net in the 30thminute before Edwards latched onto a rebound off the Keeper, who had saved the penalty shot from Eon Allen, and finished off the job by scoring in the 42nd minute. The first half ended with a 2-nill lead for Conquerors.

In an eventful second period, Beckles netted in the 66th minute to open Milrock’s account and leave the score 2-1 but that was to be the last goal from the team from the Mining Town.
Richardson out ran his opposition and executed a perfect squared pass in front of the goal but Abrams, another National player, fumbled the pass with only the Goalkeeper to beat and the chance went a begging.
However, Abrams soon made amends when he scored in the 77th minute before Benfield beat the Keeper three minutes later to the delight of the partisan fans.
Richardson was given a Red Card and a two-match ban for using foul language to the Referee.
This evening at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground, defending Champions GDF on 13 points from five matches battle Buxton United from 20:00hrs after West Demerara’s Den Amstel face-off with Victoria Kings from 18:00hrs. (Sean Devers)
