Couchman retains National Junior Chess Championship Title

Kaieteur Sports – Kyle Couchman successfully defended his title at the 2026 National Junior Chess Championships, bringing a thrilling conclusion to the tournament at the Olympic House in Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.

Supported by Sponsor EnerMech Guyana Inc., the high-stakes tournament ran from Monday, July 13, 2026, to Saturday, July 18, 2026.

Couchman secured his title defence with an undefeated run, scoring 8.5 points out of a possible 9. A final-round draw against CM Sachin Pitamber was the only encounter that kept him from a perfect score. Showing the poise of a seasoned player, Couchman commanded the board with ease throughout the event. His attention now turns to international duties, representing Guyana in Colombia

later this month before heading to the 46th Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan in September.

Following fierce battles on the boards, CM Sachin Pitamber secured a commendable second place with 8 points. Maintaining an undefeated streak throughout the championship, he racked up seven wins and two draws in the gruelling nine-round contest. Pitamber, no stranger to high-level pressure, put up a spectacular fight until the final round in his bid to dethrone the defending champion. Having already captured three national chess titles this year, he also now turns his attention to international duties as he prepares to join fellow teammate Couchman at the upcoming Chess Olympiad.

Securing the third-place podium spot, WCM Aditi Joshi finished with a commendable 6.5 points. The reigning Women’s Chess Champion put on a brilliant display of tactical skill over the board, racking up six victories and a draw, with her only setbacks occurring in the hard-fought battles during the fourth and eighth rounds against Pitamber and Couchman, respectively. WCM Joshi now shifts her focus to the international stage, where she will represent Guyana in Colombia later this month and at the Chess Olympiad.

Alexander Zhang secured fourth place with a commendable 5.5 points (comprising four wins and three draws), while his sibling, Nicholas Zhang, locked in sixth place with 4 points. Making her debut at the Junior Chess Championship – the reigning National U14 and U16 Girls Champion, Kataleya Sam, finished with a strong 3.5 points.

Looking ahead, Alexander is set to represent Guyana in Colombia, while Sam will make her inaugural appearance at the Chess Olympiad on the Guyana Women’s team.

Matthew Singh and Jeremy Cole placed seventh and eighth, respectively, with 3 points each. Rounding out the final standings with 1.5 points each were Aiden Tinnie and Javier Davenand, both earning valuable experience in their first junior championship tournament.
