By Calvin ChapmanThe Guyana Football Federation’s Elite League continued on Thursday night at the Guyana Defence Force ground on Carifesta Avenue and Vlissingen Road with a double header that saw the home team predictably trouncing last placed Cougars FC 5-0 in the feature match of the night.

However, before the fireworks, Ann’s Grove and Den Amstel played to a disappointing goalless draw; a matchup that threatened to produce many goals but the finishing touch was lacking.

Former Alpha United FC winger and national forward, William Europe was superb on the left flank for Ann’s Grove, the diminutive but quick and skillful player eased passed Den Amstel defence as easy as a walk in the park on numerous occasions but lack of sufficient support and the clinical finishing was absent on Thursday night for the East Demerara FA club. Ann’s Grove striker, Delroy Deen was the main striker, the imposing target man had a bad night in front of goal; from hitting wide of the target to losing his footing in good positions, nothing went his way in the fixture.

Den Amstel had their fair share of opportunities in the match and they had a good shout for a penalty in last ten minutes of the game but the officials didn’t agree with most of the players and fans at the army ground on the night that was chilled by the seawall breeze. Chance after chance went begging in the dying minutes and the game was destined to be goalless.

Prior to the feature match, the collective thought amongst the Cougars FC (that have lost all four games competed prior) players was that they needed to score goals after putting in only one goal in their previous four matches in the league played. However, it is more important to defend because once you don’t concede, you cannot lose.

Whatever plan the table languishers had didn’t come to fruition and the reigning Champions, GDF, with the hype of home support fired home five goals to give Cougars their fifth loss.

GDF, who will be representing Guyana at the CFU club competition next month in Dominica, didn’t play as fluid as one would expect the National Champions to perform but nevertheless, Cougars were so hapless that they let by five goals, which saw GDF assume the top of the league’s points standings on goal difference, ahead of Western Tigers who also have 10 points.

The league continues tomorrow at the same GDF venue with another double header. New Amsterdam will play Victoria Kings in the first match at 18:00hrs, while Milerock will play Buxton in the feature game at 20:00hrs.
