The road to the final started on June 10 with close to 160 schools signaling their intentions to make the journey, but forty-seven days later, only four remain with a chance of vying for the ultimate prize on Sunday when the final of this year’s Digicel Schools Football Championship will be played, at the National Stadium.
Among the schools that have made it this far is reigning and four-time champions Christianburg / Wismar and while they will be seeking to add another title to their already burgeoning cabinet, they will have to contend with three other formidable opponents in last year’s beaten finalist Chase Academic Foundation, Sir Leon Lessons and Berbice’s Bush Lot Secondary.
These four teams have not made it this far through luck, but rather they’ve all shown superior ability and deserving of their place in the last four which takes place today, at the Leonora Synthetic Track facility, West Demerara.
In the opening game from 16:00 hrs, Chase Academic Foundation tackle Bush Lot and this ecounter will be followed by the clash between Christianburg / Wismar and Sir Leon Lessons at 18:00 hrs.
The opening game between Chase Academic Foundation and Bush Lot, though some may believe that the former should win in a canter, could prove more difficult than many think.
In the world on sports, very often teams that reach this far would have shown the necessary pedigree to make it to this stage so it is easy to envisage a tough and close battle among the two combatants.
However, whatever advantage there is should go to Chase Academic Foundation, a team loaded with special talent, but has found the going much tougher in the latter rounds of the champinship.
They are stacked with a cadre of national Under-17 players that recently participated in the Caribbean Football Union World Cup qualifiers so they will no doubt be chomping at the bit to get to the fianl once again and even win this time around.
On the other hand, Bush Lot has a great opportunity to become the first team from Berbice to make it to the final and this consolation alone could instigate the kind of determination that could reap success.
Chase will be depending on the services of Captain Jeremy Garett, Job Caesar, Kelsey Benjamin and Stephon Reynolds to bolster their chances of winning, while Titus Webster, who netted a hat-trick in the quarter-finals for Bush Lot, must play a pivotal role if they are to advance.
The Christianburg / Wismar versus Sir Leon Lessons have all the hallmarks of a blockbuster affair, but once again the defending champion holds the edge.
They looked way below their best in the early rounds, but has gradually been finding their form and this is an ominous sign for any opposition.
They’ve been to this juncture on many occasions and while they are in a rebuilding phase due to the ineligibility of quite a few players from last year the team still seems to be a formidable one.
The in-form Omar Brewley, who scored a wonder goal, is expected to be the lynchpin of their quest for another final berth, while Antwaine Gill, Amar Jones and Jumaine Kingston are all players capable of winning matches.
On the other hand, Sir Leon will be relying on the performances of Captain David George and Sylvester Richardson to orchestrate a victory.
The two matchups should provide crowd pleasing football for the fans that’re expected to descend in numbers at the facility.
The respective band of supporters might be crucial in both games.
