Under a cloudless sky in perfect condition for cricket, Betsy Ground Triple Stars won the YWCC annual fundraiser Mash Cup 2016 played at the Cumberland ground last Sunday. In the reduced two overs final, they defeated Scotiabank Buski 11 by 8 wickets and 1 ball to spare.
For the first time, because of the growing popularity of the tournament, twelve teams participated in a party like atmosphere blessed with a large crowd. Scotiabank Buski 11 won the toss and elected to take first strike and made 19 for 3 off their allotted two overs. Kishan Gangaram took 2 wickets for Betsy Ground Triple Star who replied with 22 for 2 with one ball to spare. Satanand Mahabir and Devendra Ramoutar took a wicket a piece.
In the first round matches, Gangaram defeated Canefield Sports Club, YWCC gained walk over from Seawell, Scotiabank Buski 11 won against Canje Pathfinders, No 19 A got the better of No 19 B, Betsy Ground Triple Star defeated Goed Bananen Land and Rose Hall CC thrashed No 7 All Stars. In round two, Gangaram upset YWCC, Scotiabank Buski 11 got the better of No 19 A and Betsy Ground TS won against RHCC in a super over. Scotiabank Buski 11 won the semi final against Gangaram.
Betsy Ground Triple Star won $60,000 and a beautiful trophy, Kishan Gangaram $5,000 and a trophy for the man of the match and Scotiabank Buski 11 $30,000 and a trophy for their runner up effort. Gangaram CC collected $10,000 as third place winner, while Jugisteer and Ramoutar were voted best batsman and bowler respectively. Over twenty gate prizes were given away.
Preliminary figures show that the event raised close to $500,000 for the club, funds which be used to build an all weather practice facility, enclose part of the lower flat of the main pavilion, donate to three schools in the area and run the day to day activities of the club.
