Carlton ‘Benjie’ Stephenson is once again holding his annual ‘Health run Marathon’ from Soesdyke Junction
to Sophia Red shop on Sunday morning. The 26-mile run is scheduled to commence at 03:00hrs and according to the organizer registration is free and anyone can be a part of the run by turning up at the starting point before 03:00hrs on Sunday.
Stephenson who turned 60 last month is participating in the run and informed that refreshments and transportation will be provided for the participants. Stephenson also known as ‘Corn Man’ said he would like to set up a Sports programme for the youths in Sophia after Elections, adding that this Marathon has been in existence for the last 12 years and up to two years ago was contested on Emancipation Day.
“I hope in the future others can come on board for the benefits of sports among the young people of Guyana” Stephenson said.
The over-60 runner lamented that the lack of a Marathon race in Guyana for close to two decades since Banks DIH Ltd sponsored the ‘Go Guyana Run’, is a concern since Guyanese have to travel to Suriname, Barbados or Trinidad if they want to compete in Marathons” ‘Corn Man stated.
“I spoke to the Sports Minister Dr (Frank) Anthony about the absence of a Marathon in Guyana and he promised to try to organise such an event but up to now I have not heard anything back from him,” Stephenson concluded.
