The recent launching of the Taurus Women’s Club in Melanie Damishana, ECD, is hailed as developmental and officials of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security joined those from the Region 4, Regional Democratic Council (RDC) and pledged to work with the group in acquiring the requisite skills needed for the country’s development as well as the establishment of economic ventures.
This much was revealed by several speakers that attended the official opening ceremony at the club’s Main Rd, Melanie Damishana, headquarters Saturday October 12 last. Among them was Parliamentarian, Indra Chandrapal who assured the members that Government is committed to the development of Guyanese. She said that naturally those of the Melanie Damishana were also included.
Region 4 Regional Chairman, Clement Corlette, was also at the function and assured the gathering that the RDC is committed to assisting women in the region. He further pledged to assist the club in its planned programmes and projects. Mr. Corlette noted that the new Guyana Women must be educated, committed and developed so they can be role models for the coming generation.
Ms Wendy DeFlorimonte represented the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and she assured that soon her Ministry will introduce skills-training services for the women of the Melanie Damishana community. She said that the initiative will begin in various areas for the women of Melanie Damishana. She also disclosed the Ministry will offer assistance to those persons involved in business activities as well as agricultural activities.
The Taurus Women’s Club has also embarked on a skills training and literacy programmes and has launched an initiative dubbed ‘Know more about Guyana.’ The club will also engage in several tours to various parts of the country in an effort to sensitize its membership on the geography of the country. Several members of the club are also ardent race walkers and executives would be presenting the sport as a means to a healthy lifestyle.
Meanwhile, Andrew Wilson, a Guyanese based in the USA has recently donated several pieces of equipment and other accessories to the club. The donation will facilitate educational and other activities planned by the club.
A former resident of the village and also a former member of the Guyana Defense Force, Mr. Wilson, said that he is committed to ensure that women, youth and children are qualified with academics and skills needed for the development of their community and the nation. Indeed, this is not the first act of chivalry as Mr. Wilson has donated books and school supplies to the villagers and has hosted Christmas parties for the children of the community. He has since promised to increase the donation this year.
