Speaking at the launching, president of the EBDCA, former national U-19 player Rohan Sarjoo, thanked the sponsors and media for their support. He stated that no cricket was played for the past two years in the area due to the poor state of the grounds. “There are only two grounds that are in proper condition; Diamond and Laluni, the Providence ground is in bad state and the local authority should upgrade the facilities so that cricket can be played on a regular basis on the East Bank”, stated Sarjoo.
He also informed that cricket will continue in the mining town of Linden which is affiliated to the EBDCA.
Assistant Secretary of the Upper Demerara Cricket Association, Sharon Williams said they are getting themselves organised for both competitions.
Representative of G Spot bar Shakira Gafoor said they are happy to be associated with cricket on the East Bank and will continue to support the game in the area. She stated that this is an opportunity to help develop the youths and cricket. Manager of Goodwood
Racing Service Ian John indicated that the company is pleased to sponsor cricket for the third year on the East Bank and it is important that the NDCs make grounds available in the interest of the game.
He said that youths should get an opportunity to showcase their talent and the Goodwood Racing Service is happy that Linden is back on track. The U-19 competition starts on Saturday 23rd while the open tournament commences on the 30th of March. Vice President of the BBDCA Johnny Azeez informed that the U-19 competition is divided into 5 zones; Ruimveldt to Peters Hall, Providence to Little Diamond, Diamond SC, Soesdyke and Linden, while 27 clubs will compete for honours in the open category. He said the U-19 tournament will be used as a yardstick to select the East Bank team for the Demerara Inter Association competition.
