Taffin Khan had to work over time to turn back the challenge of former national Chess champion Berbician Kristal Persaud to emerge victor in the senior category of the A. Ally and sons 25th Anniversary one day Rapid Chess Tournament which was played recently in New Amsterdam, Berbice at the New Amsterdam Town Hall under the guidance of the Guyana Chess Federation.
Two categories were played with Khan taking the senior prize while and Suhai Feng winning in the junior section.
After seven rounds of keenly contested chess Khan and Persaud were tied with the same number of points.
It was now required of them to contest in a play off which lasted for 30 minutes and at the end of that extra time Khan came out victor.
In third place was Andrew Gomes with Gopaul Samaroo finishing fourth, Steve Leung fifth and Amernauth Seegobin sixth.
In the junior half, Feng won from Rashad Hussain, Dane Grimmond, Eldon Lawson, Davindra Sewnauth and Russel Chase as they occupied the first six places.
The tournament was played in the rapid Chess format, with each player using the chess clock and getting a maximum playing time of 20 minutes, per game.
At the end of the game the winners were presented with their prizes by principals of the A. Ally and sons Company in Berbice.
The tournament was played as part of the business entity’s 25th anniversary.
According to CEO of the company, apart from it being their 25th anniversary activity it is always a part of the company policy to give back to the community in which they serve and they see sports as an important cog in fulfilling that mandate.
Treasurer of The GCF Shiv Nandalall congratulated the sponsors and said that the gesture by the A. Ally and sons group was a timely one.
He also took the opportunity to call on other business persons in various parts of Guyana to come forward and sponsor more tournaments.
The sponsors said it will be an annual affair.
