By Franklin Wilson
Guyana’s most successful youth and sports club, {Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club} located at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice, yesterday launched their 11th Annual Youth Review Magazine which according to Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster, is dedicated to the Club’s 20th Anniversary celebrations.
Yesterday’s launch took place at the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company’s Canteen at Telephone House, Hadfield Street, Georgetown and was attended by, among others, GT&T’s Marketing Executive Wystan Robertson, GT&T’s Deputy General Manager Terry Holder, Guyana Cricket Board Vice President Bissoondyal Singh, Georgetown Cricket Association President Roger Harper and representatives of the club’s sponsors including Sterling Products, Bakewell, Ricks & Sari, UNICEF and Metro.
Foster, a founder member of the club at the age of 21, in giving a synopsis of what the magazine contained explained that they have been producing such a document since 2000 as a means of informing the nation of the work they are doing and also to encourage other clubs to follow in their footsteps.
The 48-page magazine has been produced by the Club’s Public Relations and Educational Committees. It contains over 35 articles on activities in 2009/10, highlights major achievements over the years, profiles of several outstanding club members, cricket records, a pictorial review, an article on UNICEF and the club’s all time cricket eleven among others.
In feature remarks GT&T’s Wystan Robertson extended congratulations to the club for another well compiled magazine while also offering bouquets to the club on its 20th Anniversary, noting that the company was pleased to be aligned with the entity whose objectives are to serve the youths of Guyana.
“This Club has proven itself to be one of the more successful sports clubs in Guyana and testimony to this, is the many national and international accolades that have been showered on you over the years. Our current Guyana Amazon Conquerors has three players from the club; West Indies Women’s team player Shemaine Campbell and you were also named the Sports club of the year award for 2009.”
Robertson noted that the club has taken on the role of community leader and mentor to the youth in the community through the vehicle of sports. “This model we at GT&T applaud, as a company we place great importance in engaging our future generation in a most positive way; in a way that teaches our youths the value of discipline, hard work and responsibility. The RHTY&SC has been in concert with this company’s youth vision and offers opportunities for youth to engage in activities that provides a foundation for healthy lifestyles as adults.”
GT&T, he said remains aligned with the ideals of the club, continues to wish them the best and will continue to support and enhance the club.
Robertson disclosed that the RHTY&SC will soon be provided with Emagine High Speed Internet Access.
“As the largest and most successful sporting club in Guyana, it is only fitting that you be backed by the largest and most successful telecommunications company in Guyana. Both have strived for excellence and both have achieved great service to the people of Guyana.”
DGM Terry Holder described the club’s performance as remarkable reminiscing that GT&T has done all it can to assist Guyana’s leading club.
Holder, who has been associated with the RHTY&SC from its inception said he is extremely proud of their performance over the years and the high level of accountability they have displayed towards their sponsors.
“You have done a marvelous job in attending the needs of the youth, females and the wider community and we are convinced that our investment in you over the years was well made.”
Also delivering remarks were Bissoondyal Singh, Roger Harper, Manager of Sterling Products Ramsay Ali and former GCB Secretary Bishwa Panday.
The Magazine will be distributed to the club’s many sponsors, government agencies, the Diplomatic Community, overseas based Guyanese, NGO’s and libraries among others.
Gratitude was extended by Foster on behalf of the club to all who assisted in making the magazine reality. Special mention was made of GT&T/Cellink for being the main sponsor.
“The RHTY&SC would not have attained the heights we have were it not for this remarkable company, GT&T and today I am proud to say that they have been one of the main reasons why we are the best in Guyana.” Foster declared.
Foster, who gave a synopsis of the major achievements of the club over the years, proudly stated that they successfully achieve over 150 projects on a yearly basis. He reminded the gathering that the journey for the club continues pointing out that they cannot predict the future but was confident that once they continue to work hard and be honest, the next twenty years would be even better.
“As long as God give us breath, we shall work to make his world a better place one day at a time. It is our hope that all of our friends would continue to support us and continue to walk by our side. Together we can make a difference.”
Foster ended yesterday’s activity by making a call to all cricket administrators to work together for the better of the sport. “The job you are doing is not for yourself but for the development of others. Let us put the players first and stop the fighting.”
