He won a silver medal and was the only boxer to procure such an accolade at the Junior Commonwealth Games held in Pune India in 2008, and was subsequently adjudged Junior Sportsman of the year. Now Clevon Rock is aiming for bigger accomplishments following his selection to join the national team to improve his chances for selection to the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) scheduled for San Juan Puerto Rico in July.
Rock improved his chances for selection with a classical display over Republican boxer, Nankumar Singh when the two met in one of the three amateur bouts on the Hector ‘Machito’ Camacho/Denny Dalton under-card. Rock eventually won the bout and even though his technique was superb, he will still be required to put in the hard work necessary for attaining medals at the CAC Games.
The Nankumar bout last week was a tough fight for the slimly built Rock. He turned a sterling effort and was eventually adjudged the winner. However, it was not easy going as Nankumar turned up the heat and backed him up on numerous occasions. The final round was torrid for Rock as Nankumar attacked with gusto. Luckily for Rock, what the Republican has in aggression, he lacks in technique. Rock was able to stem the tide until the final bell. When he was announced as the winner, the crowd booed vociferously while cheering heartily for Nankumar.
Recently, the management of Hand in Hand Insurance Company acquiesced to a sponsorship package for one of the boxers on the CAC Games team. During the handing over ceremony, the Fire Manager/Director, Howard Cox warned the boxers that the tournament would be no cakewalk.
He pointed out that local boxers would have to train exceedingly hard and dig very deep if they are to overcome the tough fighters from Latin America and the Caribbean. This caveat should not be taken lightly and the boxers going to Puerto Rico must be told of the demanding battles to expect.
The other boxers slated for national duty are Ray Sandiford, Dexter Jordon, Bert Braithwaite and Devon Boatswain.
Organizer of bouts, Terrence Poole recently intimated that the GABA executive has dispatched a letter to Commodore, Gary Best requesting the use of the Ayangana barracks to house the national team.
Despite the late response to the correspondence Poole is confident that the Commodore would acquiesce to the request.
The boxers are now engaged in stiff training at the National Park early in the morning and in the gym late into the evening.
