– Preparing for GRFU Schools League
Brand Manager of Geddes Grant Ltd Stuart May presented a quantity of jerseys under the Colgate brand to students of the Covent Garden Secondary School during a simple ceremony which was held at the institution yesterday.
The gift according to May is for them to wear during the Guyana Rugby Football Union –organised Schools League which is scheduled to be played on a date to be announced later.
The tournament had to be pushed back from the original date due to the ongoing inclement weather and the Organisers are yet to determine the new date for its commencement.
May speaking at the presentation ceremony, which also had in attendance Headmistress Julie Duncan, Troy Yhip, who conducts the coaching sessions and Teacher Neil Hopkinson, said that the main aim of the Company is to help the next generation of rugby players come through the system.
“We are hoping that our involvement could lead to the emergence of the next generation of outstanding rugby players come through the ranks,” May told this newspaper.
He added that the involvement of the players at such an early stage could also help inculcate good discipline which is an important requirement for life.
The former Yamaha Caribs player pointed out that all Guyanese should feel proud of the achievements of the Men’s and Women’s squads, noting that their successes at the regional level has brought positive recognition to the game here.
He urged that equal emphasis be placed on both the males and females engaged in the sport.
Yhip, who has been the persevering actor in the development of the sport at the school informed that the programme started just over one year ago and has so far produced two players who went on to become national Under-19 players (Vallon Adams and Claude Alexander), while another Raj Chandrasekar has just been included on the provisional squad in training for the upcoming Regional U-19 Tournament.
Hopkinson in his remarks thanked Yhip, Yamaha Caribs and Geddes Grant for their support for the school’s teams, adding that the programme is indeed a very good initiative which will also serve to build capacity among the youths.
