Wendell Meusa assumes lead as Keishar’s/FIDE Chess qualifier continues
National chess champion, Wendell Meusa defeated Michael Pereira to finish on four points and assumed the lead when chess players convened for fourth round action in the Keishar’s/FIDE Chess Qualifier at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street Georgetown, over the past weekend.
Pereira had earlier led the points standing before he faced Meusa in Friday’s round of matches. Meusa turned in a classical display, underlining his status as national champion to earn a hard fought victory. He further continued his dominance on Saturday with a decisive victory over Ronuel Greenidge.
The points standing after four rounds are: Wendell Meusa (4 1/2), Taffin Khan (3 1/2), Ronuel Greenidge, Errol Tiwari, Shiv Nandalall and David Khan (3 1/2 each), Loris Nathoo (2 1/2), Michael Pereira, Ryan Singh, Dennis Dillon, Ron Motilall, Frankie Farley and Learie Webster (2 each), Sham Khan and Raan Motilall (1 1/2 apiece) while Saeed Ali, Alex Joseph and Craig Sylvester are all on one point apiece.
Errol Tiwari also played a brilliant game to defeat Loris Nathoo in Friday’s sessions while Taffin Khan got past Frankie Farley. Learie Webster then defeated Alex Joseph shortly before Taffin’s father, David, prevailed over Haatram Parbat.
The younger Khan returned on Saturday to chalk up a victory over Learie Webster while Pereira dropped another game to Tiwari in a fierce encounter that lasted all of three hours and forty-five minutes.
Shiv Nandalall and Ryan Singh then faced off in a very competitive match, the former player earning a victory over the latter. The elder Khan then finished the day on a winning note with a decisive victory over Dennis Dillon.
The tournament continues this Wednesday at the same venue with action in round five while round six is set to get underway on Saturday starting at 16:45hrs. Keishar’s Gift Shoppe is the exclusive sponsor of the tournament.
