Guyana ended its sojourn in the football tournament of the Inter-Guiana Games with a 2-1 loss to Suriname yesterday morning at the Baduel Stadium repeating their winless performance from the previous year and putting Guyana out of winning the first stage.
Guyana depended heavily on football and athletics to win the initial stage of the Games, but that turned into futility when French Guiana drilled the Guyanese team 3-0 Friday, placing immense pressure on them to beat Suriname by a huge margin if they are to stand a chance.
But that was not to be as the Surinamese proved to be the most superior offensively yesterday in the early minutes of the game. Suriname pressured Guyana’s defence from the first whistle to score on the run in the first minute, which bewildered the Guyanese.
The Vitorino Pinas strike in the penalty box off a clinical corner pass opened up the floodgates for the team, who visibly outhustled Guyana early, before the potency of Stefano Ryzel added more misery with an 11th minute strike.
The early goals obviously dented the will of the Guyanese, but Sheldon Holder returned some of the enthusiasm when he finished a penalty in the 35th minute to keep the team in the hunt as just one goal separated the two sides vying for supremacy.
However, the game ended with the same score-line as the second half produced a more defensive Surinamese unit with Guyana’s problem from Friday repeating itself in their second game-the team just could not finish their easy chances.
Swimming
Guyana finished with eight medals in the IGG Swimming competition, which placed them last in the tri-nation event. Following up on the two medals they had won up to press time Friday night, the swimmers later added another six in the competition.
Henk Lowe won a silver medal in the 100m Backstroke in 1:10.69 while Serrano Gonsalves took bronze in the same race in 1:10.89. Suriname’s Tjoe Robert won the race in 1:07.87. Guyana had its next individual medal in the female 100m Freestyle.
Brittany Van-Lange continued her impressive performance when she added a silver medal to the one she won on the first day of the swimming competition. Van-Lange returned 1:06.98 behind French Guiana’s Celine Nemor (1:04.96) and Suriname’s Sungalia Soetosenojo, who had 1:08.09 for third place respectively.
Guyana’s other swimming medals were all bronze in the boys and girls’ medley relay and boys and girls’ freestyle relay.
The teams collected four medals from the relays in addition to the five individual medals that Van-Lange, Gonsalves and Lowe collected.
Chess
In Guyana’s game against French Guiana yesterday, Chrystal Khan was the only player to get on the winners’ list while team-mates Taffin Khan and Saeed Ali had a draw and loss respectively at the boardroom of the Baduel Stadium around mid-day.
Guyana picked up 1 ½ points for their efforts while French Guiana got 2 ½ points. Guyana goes up against Suriname today in the final round of their Chess competition. Chess points are not counted in the overall points system of the Guiana Games.
