Kaieteur Sports – Left-arm spin twins Gudakesh Motie, who followed up his 10-wicket haul in the last game, with a magical 5-fer and veteran Veerasammy Permaul who punched an unbeaten half-century and snagged 4 second innings wickets, inspired an implosion by the Windward Volcanoes who sunk to their second successive defeat, this time by a whopping 141-run deficit and a full day’s play left in Antigua.
The Champs piled on the runs to give themselves a bigger shot of winning which they did, inside 4 days as they bowled out their opponents twice before having to bat just one time as they piled on a mammoth 491 all out; initially replying to the Volcanoes’ first innings total of 151 all out.
After a solid top-order performance from the upper order big guns, the bowlers took over the show with an exceptional performance led by veteran spinner Permaul who finished unbeaten on 82 off 150 balls (9×4 2×6).
Fast-bowler Shamar Joseph, who missed a quick fifty but played extremely well for his 46 off 32 balls, along with Nial Smith, applied himself for a useful 37, helped the Eagles to almost fly to a 500 first innings total.
Right-arm off-break spinner Kenneth Dember toiled for his 4 wickets which came at a high price as he conceded 113 runs off his 40 over spell.
Medium-pacer Shadrack Descarte bagged 2-67 with assistance from 4 others who claimed a wicket each for the Volcanoes, but essentially failed to stop a marauding tail-end charge.
Despite a classy 91 from opener Ackeem Auguste, who missed out on another possible three figure score, only Kavem Hodge who hit 4 fours in his 27, Stephan Pascal (16) and Sunil Ambris (15) resisted before Motie and Permaul unleashed a series of blows, which essentially reduced the Windwards from the safe position of 141-3 to their final second innings total of 199 all out from 43 overs.
The two left-arm spinners spun webs around the opposition batsmen, as their combined 9 wickets immediately put a stop to what looked like a turnaround second innings, thanks to the start provided by Auguste.
Earlier after Permaul and Joseph resumed their innings on the third day, the Volcanoes would have fancied their chances at wrapping up the innings early before the two bowlers had other ideas.
Permaul showed all his past experiences as a former West Indies Test player by keeping his cool and allowing his younger teammate to have a go, as he quietly brought up a vital half-century.
Joseph smacked 6 fours and 2 sixes but fell to Dember, which broke the partnership. Smith launched a brief counterattack, finding the ropes twice along with two sixes before being trapped LBW by Darrel Cyrus (1-95).
Meanwhile, rain stopped play between the Jamaicans who racked up 457 all out in the first innings and the Barbados Pride, who were brilliantly placed at 341-2 in reply.
