Grove & Timehri Panthers
post opening day wins
Grove and Timehri Panthers posted early wins as competitive football made a welcome return to the East Bank of Demerara after almost two years when the Fruta sponsored Under-13 League kicked off yesterday, at the Providence ground.
Grove hammered Bagotstown 5-1, while Timehri Panthers edged Samatta Point 1-0.
Grove dominated Bagotstown throughout the encounter with their excellent ball control and aggressive play and were led to victory by Mervin Squires, who netted a brace. He converted in the 19th and 47th minute.
The opening goal which was also the first of the tournament came off the boot of Trevor Jones in the 10th minute.
Three minutes later from a well taken free kick, the advantage was doubled by Lloyd Matthews. David Mc Beth added the fifth in the 40th.
Bagotstown were able to pull one back one minute before full time, Shane Singh doing the honours.
Firing in the winner in a keen tussle between Timehri Panthers and Samatta Point was Tevis James, who scored in the 33rd minute.
The match-up was closely contested though scoring chances were far and few. Panthers, however, made the best use of theirs. Action will continue Saturday, at the same venue.
Meanwhile, the General Council of the East Bank Football Association (EBDFA) will meet on Wednesday at the Providence Community Centre from 17:30hrs.
