Bryan, John win titles
Three more categories were decided when the 2008 Independence Open Table Tennis Competition continued on Sunday, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Those winning titles were Nigel Bryan, who claimed the Boys 15 and 18 and under divisions, while Michelle John defeated her old rival Trenace Lowe to take the Girls 18 and under title.
In the day’s full results:
(Boys 15 and under)-
Nigel Bryan defeated Samuel Fraser 11- 7, 11-7, 16-14 (3-0) in the final
Stephen Patoir then beat Denzel Hopkinson 11-9, 5-11, 11-9, 11-7 (3-1) to take third place
In semi final action- Bryan defeated Patoir 3-0 and Fraser defeated Hopkinson 3-1.
Earlier, in quarter final play- Bryan trounced Collis Richardson 3-0; Patoir gained a similar result against Dillon Mahadeo 3-0; Fraser squeezed past Elishaba Johnson 3-2 and Hopkinson defeated Kyle Edghill 3-1.
(Girls 18 years and under)-
Michelle John edged Trenace Lowe 12-14, 14-12, 14-12, 10-12, 11-8 (3-2), while Ambrose Thomas proved too strong for Adeille Rosheuvel, beating her 11-8, 12-10, 11-8 (3-0).
In the semi-finals, John defeated Thomas 3-1, while Lowe was a straight sets winner over Rosheuvel by a 3-0 margin.
Earlier, Lowe eliminated Britnee Prescod 3-0; Rosheuvel surprised Tiffany Blair 3-1; Thomas got sweet revenge against Chelsea Edghill by a 3-1 margin (Edghill defeated Thomas in the 15 years and under final) and John defeated Angela Rampersaud 3-1.
(Boys18 years and under)-
Nigel Bryan defeated Warren Hackshaw 11-4, 13-11, 11-9 (3-0) to claim the title, while Darwin Walcott narrowly beat Seweon McGarrell 11-8, 4-11, 12-10,7-11,11-6 (3-2) for third place.
Bryan defeated McGarrell 3-0 and Hackshaw beat Walcott 3-1 in semi-final action. Earlier, Bryan defeated Leevon Beaton 3-0; McGarrell crushed Dillon Mahadeo 3-0; Hackshaw scraped past Denzel Hopkinson (3-2) and Walcott blanked Stephen Patoir 3-0.
Those making through to the last 16 in the 21 years and under included Joel Alleyne, Dillon Caesar, Andrew Van Sertima, Leevon Beaton, Eirran Barrett, Devon Richmond, Dillon Mahadeo, Trenace Lowe, Stephan Patoir, Nigel Bryan, Ambrose Thomas, Warren Hackshaw, Denzel Hopkinson, Darwin Walcott, Trean Phillips and Michelle John.
Beaton, Richmond, Lowe, Bryan and Thomas have since progressed to the quarter-finals after defeating their respective opponents.
Beaton defeated Van Sertima 3-1, Richmond beat Barrett 3-1, Lowe blanked Mahadeo 3-0, Bryan cruised past Patoir 3-1 and Thomas edged Hackshaw 3-2
The tournament continued yesterday.
