LABA salute’s late founder Al McDonald at special ceremony
‘‘His contributions will forever remain part of the fabric of Linden Basketball” says LABA President Dawn McCammon Barker
Kaieteur Sports – “On behalf of the Executive Committee, members, players, coaches, officials, and the entire Linden basketball community, I extend sincere condolences to his family, relatives, and friends. We pray that they find comfort in the remarkable legacy he leaves behind and strength in the cherished memories they shared with him,” so said President of the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) Ms. Dawn McCammon-Barker at a special ceremony at the Community Hard Court in Retrieve, as the association took time to salute the late LABA president Al McDonald Chapman, for his contribution to the development of the sport in Linden.

In her statement McCammon-Barker remarked: “His vision transformed basketball in Linden from a pastime into a respected and organized sport, fostering discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, and community pride. The countless players, coaches, officials, and supporters who have been part of the basketball fraternity over the years are beneficiaries of the legacy he worked tirelessly to build.
Al’s contributions extended far beyond the game itself. He was a mentor, an advocate for youth development, and a steadfast supporter of community advancement through sport. His influence helped shape lives, inspire dreams, and strengthen the sporting culture of our town.”
McCammon Barker referenced in particular to basketball followers that “Though our founder has departed this life, his vision, passion, and contributions will forever remain a part of the fabric of Linden basketball.
Rest in eternal peace, Al McDonald. Your legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Al Mc before migrating to the USA worked as a sports journalist and basketball official from the mid-1970s until 1984, when he left these shores to cover the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Al died after being badly burnt from a fire in his apartment on May 10 at his home in Florida, which caused hospitalization and his eventual demise on May 25. His ashes after cremation in Florida, were brought back to Guyana this past week by family members.
