(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has officially confirmed that the 2026 Elite League will kick off on August 29, setting the stage for another battle to determine the country’s National Champion.

However, while the governing body has announced the start date, it has yet to release the competition fixtures or reveal the prize structure with less than a month remaining before the opening whistle.

Defending champions Slingerz FC will headline the 10-team competition after producing one of the most dominant campaigns in Elite League history last season.

The unbeaten champions compiled an impressive record of 16 victories and two draws to secure the national title and the $2m first-place prize.

Slignerz FC were crowned last season’s champions of the GFF Elite League.

Joining Slingerz in this year’s championship race are returning top-flight side Camptown FC, along with Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC, Guyana Police Force (GPF) FC, Fruta Conquerors, Western Tigers, Santos, Monedderlust, Ann’s Grove United and Den Amstel FC.

The clubs will all be chasing national supremacy and the honour of being crowned Guyana’s premier football club and a chance to represent the country at the regional level.

Slingerz will once again be among the favourites after last season’s commanding display, led by goal machine Kemar Beckford, and the league’s Most Valuable Player Derron Niles.

Niles finished the campaign with 17 goals and 16 assists, making him one of the competition’s standout performers.

The 2024 champions, GDF FC, finished second in the previous season after recording 12 wins, two draws and three defeats, earning $1.2m in prize money. Police FC completed the podium places and collected $800,000 after another competitive campaign.

Darron Niles was named last season’s Elite League MVP.

Despite the excitement surrounding the league’s return, uncertainty continues to surround the financial incentives for participating clubs.

With just over three weeks before kickoff, multiple sources indicate that clubs remain dissatisfied with last season’s prize structure and have been engaged in discussions with the GFF in hopes of securing a more meaningful financial package.

Club officials have reportedly argued that the increasing cost of operating teams, including player welfare, transportation, accommodation and match preparation, has significantly outpaced the current rewards.

Kaieteur News contacted officials from the country’s three leading clubs, Slingerz FC, GDF FC and Police FC, for comment. However, representatives from each club declined to speak publicly, indicating that they preferred to allow ongoing discussions with the federation to conclude before making any statements.

Executives from several other clubs, however, were more forthcoming, arguing that the Elite League deserves a significantly improved prize structure.

They pointed to the irony that futsal competitions in Guyana are often completed over a much shorter period while offering substantially larger prize purses.

One club executive, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggested that prize money should not only reward the champion but also provide meaningful financial support throughout the standings.

“We know realistically clubs like Slingerz, GDF and Police have assembled many of the country’s best players, so not every club is competing only for the title. The prize structure needs to reward every team’s commitment because the costs to compete are high regardless of where you finish,” the official noted.

The ongoing discussions also shine a spotlight on another challenge confronting the Elite League, the federation’s continued struggle to attract sustained corporate investment.

While the GFF has repeatedly promoted the competition’s growing audience, commercial backing has remained limited and, by many accounts, has declined over recent years.

In announcing the new season on its social media platforms, the federation highlighted that the 2025 Elite League attracted more than 27,000 spectators throughout the season and generated over 50 million content views across digital platforms, describing those figures as evidence of the league’s increasing popularity and reach.

However, the federation stopped short of explaining how those impressive engagement numbers translated into financial returns for the competition or whether they had attracted new commercial partners capable of increasing investment in clubs and prize money.
