Canadian firm begins construction of 13-km access road to gold project
(Kaieteur News) – Canadian miner Gold Port Corporation has commenced construction of a 13-kilometre access road to its Groete Gold Copper Project in Guyana.
The company said the access road will extend from the Manaka Road on the East Bank of the Essequibo River to the Groete Creek project site. The road will include several all-weather bridges to provide year-round access. Gold Port said an advance crew has already completed planning and logistical preparations, while heavy equipment has been transported by barge to the starting point of the project.
Company President Adrian F.C. Hobkirk described the start of construction as a key milestone for the company’s exploration plans. He noted, “The starting of the Groete Gold Copper Project access road is an important kickoff for our planned drill program. Recent management appointments will facilitate a robust and aggressive drill program upon completion of the access road.”
In October 2025, the company announced it had selected Jaisingh’s Equipment Rental (JER) of Georgetown Guyana for the construction of approximately 13 kilometers of dirt road access including some bridge and drainage construction access to its Groete Gold Copper Project. However, in a February 2026 statement, Gold Port said after several attempts and additional issues with the project, it decided to pivot and purchase heavy equipment and complete the road development with existing staff.
Gold Port owns 100% of the Groete Gold Project, where exploration began in 2012 and included a follow up drill programme that allowed the January 2019 calculation of an Inferred Mineral Resource of 1.57 million Gold ( Au ) Copper ( Cu ) Equivalent ( Eq ) ounces ( Approximately 1,1 million Au ounces and 195 million pounds of Cu are contained within 74 million tonnes ).
The project is located 64 kilometers west-southwest of Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, and 11 kilometers west of the Essequibo River.
The company’s renewed interest in the project was triggered by high gold prices. Gold Port had said that amid rising gold prices it completed a review of the project and in 2024, the company’s permits were renewed for by the Government of Guyana through the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC). The three permits covering a combined 1,384 hectares (approximately 3,400 acres), were recently further renewed.
