Kaieteur Sports – The West Indies Select XI pulled off a stunning 15-run victory against Sri Lanka on the final day of their four-day warm-up match thanks to some brilliance from fast-bowler Nial Smith who finished with 9 wickets after bagging a match-winning 5-fer at the Coolidge Cricket Ground, Antigua yesterday.
After posting a reasonable score of 281 batting first, Sri Lanka suffered a dramatic batting collapse on the 4th day and was bundled out for just 108 runs while chasing a modest target of 124.
The visitors entered the day in a dominant position, needing fewer than 100 runs with nine wickets intact.
However, a disciplined bowling performance led by the Guyana Harpy Eagles fast-bowler Smith, who snared 5-30 to go along with his 1st innings haul of 4-58 to end with a total of 9-88; more importantly pushing his case for a possible selection ahead of the Test series.
Fellow fast-bowler Alzarri Joseph, who bagged 2 wickets in the first, tore through the lineup with 4-41 as he combined for 9 wickets alongside Smith.
Earlier in the match, the West Indies Select XI scored 205 in their first innings, anchored by Kirk McKenzie’s 58.
Sri Lanka replied with 281, capturing a 76-run lead thanks to Dinesh Chandimal’s gritty 74.
The hosts then battled back to score 199 in their second innings, driven by an aggressive 65 from all-rounder Joshua Bishop, thus setting the stage for Sunday’s spectacular bowling defence led by the pair of speedsters.
With the T20I series already under their belt and a strong showing in the 4-day practice game after a quick shift in format, the Windies will be keen on carrying their momentum and form into the first Test match which bowls off Thursday at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. (Clifton Ross)
