Kaieteur Sports – Some of Guyana’s most promising young cricketers will have an opportunity to impress an international audience when the Uprising Promotions Secondary School Inter-Ward Eight-a-Side Round-Robin Tapeball Cricket tournament bowls off this Saturday at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac.
Adding to the significance of this year’s tournament, members of US-based DC Metro Cricket Organisation (DCMCO) will be in Guyana from July 23-27 to observe the competition, which has been regarded as one of the country’s longest-running grassroots tournaments.
The visiting delegation, expected to arrive tomorrow, will spend several days assessing the local talent as secondary school players showcase their abilities throughout the tournament. Their visit also coincides with the organisation’s sponsorship of this year’s championship, further strengthening ties between the overseas-based cricket body and local youth development initiatives.
Organised by Uprising Promotions, the annual competition is open exclusively to secondary school boys aged 16 years and under, with participants required to be currently enrolled at the schools they represent.
The tournament has built a reputation for providing a competitive platform for emerging players, with several former participants progressing to higher levels of the game after making their names in the Tapeball arena.
“Competition is expected to be fierce as teams battle in the eight-a-side, round-robin format for championship honours, with trophies, medals and other prizes up for grabs for the top-performing schools.”
Tournament coordinator James “Uprising” Lewis has encouraged supporters to turn out and witness the next generation of cricketing talent in action, while noting that interested persons can contact him on 672-6179 for additional information.
The first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 12:34 p.m. on Saturday at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac.
