Kaieteur Sports – The West Indies Select XI gained a slight edge after Kirk McKenzie struck a Day 1 half-century to kickstart the 4-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka which bowled off yesterday at the Coolidge Cricket Ground Antigua.
Led by Guyana Harpy Eagles captain Tevin Imlach, the hosts had a mixed day as they somewhat struggled significantly against a disciplined Sri Lankan bowling attack.
The West Indies Select XI found themselves in deep trouble at tea, slipping to 153-8 after 50 overs before the tail pushed the final total to 205 in the 62nd over.
At stumps, Sri Lanka were 38-1, trailing by 167 runs with Nishan Maduksha looking settled on 25* off 29 deliveries (5×4) with the veteran Dinesh Chandimal (5*) at his side, come today when the hunt resumes.

Guyana Harpy Eagles speedster Nial Smith (1-19), got the much-needed breakthrough prior to close of play on day one, removing Lahiru Udara (7).
Earlier, Windies opener Kirk McKenzie signalled his intentions early with a solid 58 off 107 balls (5×4 2×6) as he led the batting charge, despite losing his partner Ackeem Auguste (12) before the pair could actually dig in.
Middle-order batsman Kevin Wickham chipped in with 20 while Guyanese all-rounder Keemo Paul continued to bat himself into form across all formats with a nice resurgent knock of 36 (2×4 2×6).
Lower-order contributions came from the bowlers who did a great job in keeping the vessel afloat as the Windies were heavily indebted to the trio of Nial Smith (19*), Ojay Shields (16) and Alzarri Joseph (12).
Pacer Lahiru Kumara who dismissed Auguste, Jonathan Drakes (0) and Guyanese gloveman Kemol Savory (7), wrapped up his first innings outing with 4-39.
Help came from Ashith Fernando (2-26) who bowled well with the additional support from four other bowlers who returned a wicket each.
Action continues today. (Clifton Ross)
