BCB launches Sohan Construction and Haniff Contracting Companies U-23 tournament

Kaieteur Sports – Cricketers in the ancient county of Berbice can look forward to a packed cricket season once the weather improves as the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) is using the cricket break to secure sponsorship for numerous cricket tournaments from the under-12 level to first division. The board on Wednesday launched an under-23 tournament with sponsorship from contractors Chandra Sohan and Kaamodian Haniff at its Charlotte Street, New Amsterdam office.

The Sohan Construction and K. Haniff Construction Companies under-23 tournament would be for players born on or after the first of September 2003.

Chairman of the BCB Cricket Competition Committee, Leslie Solomon, stated that the tournament would start as soon as the weather improves and clubs can get their venues in order. The tournament is expected to attract at least twenty teams and several of the county’s best players are expected to be part of it.

Teams like Cotton Tree, Achievers, Bush Lot, Tucber Park, Rose Hall Canje, Mt Sinai, Guymine, Albion, Rose Hall Town Namilco Thunderbolt, Port Mourant, No 73 Young Warriors and Skeldon are among the teams expected to feature in the tournament.

The under-23 tournament is the latest in a series of cricket tournaments that the active board would be hosting in 2026. The BCB has already started its under16 and under19 tournaments for the year and has also secured sponsorship for under12, under13, under17, under21, under23, intermediate, females and second division tournaments for the rest of the year. The board has also acquired sponsorship for a two days first division tournament along with the Ivan Madray 20/20 and a fifty overs sponsored by KSM Investments.

Players like Jonathan Rampersaud, Zeymul Ramsammy, Romesh Bharrat, Isai Thorne, Afraz Budhoo, Tommai Ceasar, Rampersaud Ramnauth, Rampertab Ramnauth, Adrian Hetmyer, Ronaldo Ramdeholl, Gibran Yacoob and Justin Doobay are some of the talented players expected to feature in the tournament.

Solomon disclosed that the tournament would be played fifty overs per side on a knock out basis using the white ball and teams would be attired in coloured clothing. Interested teams have until the 10th of July to register their interest to play.

Sohan, who is also a prominent Attorney at Law in Berbice, stated that he and co-sponsor Haniff were delighted to join the BCB in its continuing effort to lift the standard of Berbice cricket. Berbice cricket, he stated, has been a strong foundation in the history of the West Indies game and he expressed confidence that the tournament would assist many promising players to boost their careers. Sohan, also expressed an interest in assisting the BCB in other developmental programmes for youth cricketers.

Chairman of the BCB Junior Selection Committee, Balram Samaroo stated that the tournament is an important bridge between the under19 and senior level for many players. He urged all the players to go out and perform to catch the eyes of the selection committee.

BCB Administrator, Angela Haniff, expressed gratitude to Sohan and Kaamodian Haniff for their sponsorship and committed the board to organising a highly successful tournament.
