Kaieteur Sports – Eight East Bank clubs descended on the National Training Centre on Sunday to kick off the Guyana Football Federation’s Elite League (East Bank) Playoff qualifiers, and the opening double header wasted no time in delivering its own drama. Two lopsided scorelines, and a flurry of individual brilliance announced that the 2026 East Bank playoff campaign has arrived with serious intent.
The afternoon’s action confirmed one thing above all else: the East Bank Association is in robust health. Both Swan United and Timehri United dismantled their opponents by commanding margins, serving notice to Herstelling, Friendship, Mocha, and Soesdyke United, all of whom are yet to play their opening encounters.
Swan United crush Circuitville 7–0
From the first whistle, Swan United showed the early-season sharpness that will worry their rivals. Abram Webb drew first blood in the 13th minute, capping a promising opening play, his goal proved the spark that ignited a relentless offensive display. Alex Downer was the standout performer, netting twice to embed himself as the fixture’s headline act, while Mark Loncke matched him with a brace of his own, forcing an advantage that Circuitville could never realistically challenge.

Timehri United power past Kuru Kururu 7–2
The second fixture offered more drama as Michael Correira imposed himself immediately, notching twice in the opening seventeen minutes to hand Timehri a commanding 2–0 lead. Correira’s penetrating runs gave Kuru Kururu’s defence no respite, and the lead was swiftly extended as Akeem James struck in the 34th minute followed by Tyrone Burnette’s effort three minutes later, making it 4–0 before the interval.
The Evans show powers Timehri United to 7-2 win. Goal scorers in that match were: Michael Correira, Akeem James, Tyrone Burnette and Leroy Evans.
The second half belonged entirely to Leroy Evans. The forward capped a virtuoso display with a late hat-trick performance that sealed an emphatic victory, firmly dismissing any prospect of a Kuru Kururu recovery. Their two consolation strikes offered scant comfort as Timehri United held their East Bank rivals to a 7-2 defeat.
Wednesday’s (May 27) second-leg games will see Herstelling, Friendship, Mocha, and Soesdyke United enter the competition, fully aware of the standards Swan United and Timehri have laid down.
The path to the final runs through an increasingly competitive East Bank field — and after Sunday’s breathtaking double header, the 2026 qualifiers promise to deliver exactly the football the region has been waiting for.
