Paul fifty brightens gloomy Day 2 for Guyana after Red Force pacers feast

Kaieteur Sports – All-rounder Keemo Paul gritted for the Harpy Eagles’ only half-century on a tough batting day controlled ironically by the Trinidad & Tobago Red Force pace attack, as Guyana enters day 3 with tons of work to do as they trail by 15 runs; in this final showdown of the season played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

Red Force resumed the second day with just a wicket in hand and an overnight Jayden Seales on 63 but after the removal of Anderson Philip for a stubborn yet useful 26; Trinidad would end their 1st innings on 260 all out.

Seales played a good hand on the opening day, bailing his team out of a ditch with his fifty but added just 7 additional runs to his total, falling for the team’s top score of 70 (7×4 2×6).

Only Khary Pierre (40), Hinds (29) and Jyd Goolie (26) got out of the blocks, following a strong showing by the Eagles seam attack.

Keemo Paul was the shining light in Guyana’s 1st innings.

Medium-pacer Paul (3-28) and fast-bowler Nial Smith (3-51) were the pick of the bowlers, with the consistent duo of left-arm spinners in Gudakesh Motie (2-45) and Veerasammy Permaul (1-57); chipping in with their usual contributions.

Guyana then lost a bit of the ground, after failing to execute a chase down followed by adding some runs to the board, which resulted in them giving up a 15 point lead to the Red Force after their 1st innings ended on 245 all out in 69.4 overs.

Paul led the scoring with a modest yet much-needed for himself and team, knock of 51 (4×4). West Indies Under-19 player Johnathan Van Lange (46), missed a good opportunity to follow his maiden ton a few days ago with a half-century or better score in the finals.

Strike pacer Seales then added 1st innings returns of 4-55 to go along with his half-century, backed by his fellow pacers in Terrance Hinds (3-46) and the slightly expensive Anderson Phillip (2-90), who much like Smith and Paul on Sunday; utilized the brilliant conditions suited for seam bowling.

Being 73-5 a little into the 27th over was a true testament to how Trinidad managed to pull the match back in their favour by the arrival of the tea interval which put the Eagles in a tricky spot; reducing them to 142 runs with five of their best men back in the dressing room.

Double Centurion from the last game Matthew Nandu (0) went cold in his 1st batting innings, along with his opening partner Tagenarine Chanderpaul (33), as both men fell to Seales.

Terrance Hinds provided ideal support in the seam department.

Hinds then snared three big wickets in reasonable span, bagging the scalps of Eagles captain Tevin Imlach (17) Kevlon Anderson who struggled all season to get going (9) and wicket-keeper Kemol Savory (17), who had been amongst the runs earlier in the tournament.

Repairs were done by Paul and Van Lange, who looked to form a useful partnership which steadied Guyana upon the resumption of play heading into the final session of day 2.

Both all-rounders took a proactive approach to the chase, keeping their running between the wickets timely, as they both found the ropes when need be.

Guyana carefully reached their 150 and 200-run checkpoints as they battled against quality bowling, with two of their key strikers looking settled in their respective roles.

However, tragedy would strike 4 runs short of what would have been another possible fifty, when Van Lange fell to Seales, who also got rid of Motie for a gutsy knock of 33.

Paul on the other hand, got to his half-century just before being knocked over by a bustling Joshua James (1-36), whose lack of wicket-taking was compensated by claiming the head of the Eagles primary scorer this innings.
