Opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul stroked the first hundred of the season for Guyana while putting his team in a winning position.
Kaieteur Sports – Opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul finally broke the shackles after a few half-centuries this season, by carving a laser-focused, unbeaten hundred which left the Windward Volcanoes, in an uphill battle as they hunt the 302 runs required for victory with a day left at the Coolidge Cricket Ground.
Following their 1st innings 242 all out, the Eagles would go on to rack up 299 all out in 99.1 overs batting a second time, leaving the Volcanoes a gargantuan 300-plus target with a day left.
Although Chanderpaul was his usual self in the middle, he played more like his father the great Shivnarine Chanderpaul, by carrying his bat towards a triple figure score; notching up his 9th 1st class ton.
His 117 not out off 297 balls with 10 fours and a solitary maximum was exactly what the Eagles needed, not just for the overall direction as they look to close out the tournament with another piece of silverware; but something for the bowlers to play with during the second innings.
Gudakesh Motie, who will have another important spell come today, gifted his team a brisk 53 off 66 balls which helped Chanderpaul to continue further piloting the innings for the entirety of Guyana’s innings of day 3.
The trio of Ryan John (3-58), Kenneth (3-52) Dember and Gilon Tyson (2-53) were solid but still allowed the Eagles to pile up a copious amount of runs.
Volcanoes opener Ackeem Auguste (7) played a mirroring innings, falling to pace yet again this time to Shamar Joseph (1-4), at basically the same time and period of the innings to which he did a few days ago.
Another reoccurring play was opener Stephan Pascal (4*) and Kavem Hodge (4*), who have been tasked yet again to try in this go around to probably aim for a draw when they resume the hunt today.
By lunch, the Eagles were 122-5 with Chanderpaul safely getting to his fifty after toiling for most of the morning session.
Chanderpaul’s master innings perhaps came at the expense of a few of his teammates, as skipper Tevin Imlach (32) and keeper Kemol Savory (12) and all-rounders Keemo Paul (11) alongside Richie Looknauth (1) failed to push forward.
Only Motie held his own, continuing his growth as a full-fledged, lower-order batsman which has been a welcome for the West Indies and Guyana, especially in a crisis situation.
Motie’s aggression and timing took immense pressure off Chanderpaul, smacking 8 fours and a six before falling to part-timer Kavem Hodge (1-33).
An unmoved Chanderpaul, in the 90’s kept his cool and when the time was right, scurried for his runs which brought up the first century by a Harpy Eagles player this season.
By the time Chanderpaul raised his bat, Guyana had already amassed a whopping 250-plus run lead with an entire afternoon session still intact but with wickets dwindling.
Veerasammy Permaul (29) hit a pair of fours and a six while Shamar scored a run-a-ball 17 featuring a four and a six, as the Eagles tail yet again stood tall with the bat to the very last wicket.
The final day of action continues today.
