Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Olympic Association has rewarded the nation’s medal-winning athletes from the recently concluded South American Youth Games with cash grants, reaffirming its commitment to youth development and high-performance sport.
The presentation was made during a simple but meaningful ceremony at the GOA’s headquarters in Liliendaal, where athletes and their parents gathered to celebrate what has been described as a successful outing for Guyana on the continental stage.
Guyana concluded the championships with an impressive haul of seven medals (three gold, one silver, and three bronze) highlighting the growing strength of its youth programme.
Track and field emerged as the standout discipline, accounting for six of the seven medals secured, with boxing bringing in the other.
Leading the charge were gold medallists Ezekiel Millington (100m) and Dequan Farrell (200m), along with the boys’ 4x100m relay team, who delivered a dominant performance.
Gordon Thompson added a silver medal in the 100m, while bronze medals came from Ebo McNeil in the 1500m and the boys’ 4x400m relay team.
President of the GOA, Godfrey Munroe, said the cash grants are intended to support the athletes’ continued training and overall development, ensuring they remain on a progressive path.
He explained that the initiative is separate from the existing Olympic Solidarity programme, which provides structured financial assistance to athletes who meet specific qualification criteria.
Addressing both athletes and their parents, Munroe praised the entire contingent, noting that their efforts have made the country proud, regardless of podium finishes.
Looking to the future, Munroe emphasised that the athletes who competed at the South American Youth Games represent the next generation of national sporting excellence.
“These young athletes are the future of sport in Guyana across their respective disciplines. Our responsibility is to continue supporting and guiding them so they can reach even greater heights,” he added.
The GOA’s gesture is expected to further motivate the country’s emerging talents as they continue their journey on the regional and international stage.
