FIFA Talent Development Scheme lays groundwork for Guyana’s football future ahead of CFU U14 Challenge Series
Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) continues to invest heavily in the future of the nation’s football through the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS), a long-term initiative aimed at identifying, nurturing and preparing the country’s brightest young prospects for the demands of regional and international competition.
As Guyana’s Under-14’s gears up for next month’s Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U14 Challenge Series in the Dominican Republic, the programme is set to face one of its biggest tests yet, with several of its beneficiaries preparing to represent the Golden Jaguars on the regional stage.

According to the GFF, the FIFA Talent Development Scheme forms part of FIFA’s global vision to ensure every talented player has access to a structured pathway for development. Through technical expertise, funding, educational resources and continuous monitoring, the programme supports member associations in creating sustainable systems capable of producing internationally competitive national teams.
For Guyana, the initiative represents a significant step forward in youth football development.
The programme however, assembles the country’s top Under-14 boys and girls in a high-performance environment, where they undergo six to eight hours of weekly training under the guidance of the GFF’s National Coaches Pool. Sessions are designed to sharpen technical ability, improve tactical awareness, enhance physical conditioning and promote personal growth, providing young footballers with a professional foundation rarely available at this age.
Approximately 24 players currently make up the programme’s core training squad, while a wider pool of around 30 players remain under regular assessment. In spite of several participants being drawn from the coastal regions, the Talent Development Scheme also creates opportunities for promising players from the hinterland and other remote communities to be identified and integrated into the national development pathway.
Several young players got the opportunity yesterday to participate in the FIFA Talent Development Scheme programme.
The TDS programme is guided under the watchful eyes of members of the GFF’s National Coaches Pool, comprising eight youth coaches responsible for implementing a consistent player development curriculum nationwide. Their work is further strengthened by the Federation’s ongoing Youth Ensemble Programme, which has expanded grassroots talent identification and broadened the search for future national players across Guyana.
That investment in youth football will soon be showcased when Guyana competes in the CFU U14 Challenge Series in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
Drawn in Tier II, Group C, Guyana is set to open its campaign against Montserrat on August 16 before taking on Anguilla the following day. Their group stage concludes against The Bahamas on August 19, with the tournament providing the country’s emerging footballers an invaluable opportunity to measure themselves against the region’s best.
More than simply chasing results, the competition serves as the first major international examination for players who have progressed through the FIFA Talent Development Scheme. It offers a chance to translate months of structured training into competitive performances while exposing the youngsters to the demands and pressures of international football.
The tournament also represents another important milestone in the GFF’s long-term player development strategy. Coaches will use the competition to evaluate the players’ growth in a competitive setting, while performance data and technical reports will feed directly back into the Talent Development Scheme, ensuring continuous improvement within the programme.

What is needed also is taking the game, football to the people and making grounds/fields available with proper maintenance similar to the game of cricket!!! People need to be encouraged & motivated so the game could attract a cross section of society with wider participation/involvement , more interest & investment for the game!!! Coaches should be awarded for having multi-racial participant/players in their camp for training & development!!!
