The Petra organized Massy Distribution Schools U18 Football Tournament resumes at the Queen’s College ground. Schools are set to battle for crucial game-points as the tournament wraps up round two action today and tomorrow.
The opening phase delivered a blend of dominant performances with Chase’s Academic Foundation dwindling the hope of its earliest contender in a 22-nil rout while a few surprising upsets came at the hands of Ann’s Grove and Lodge Secondary each with opening victories heading into the round two action. The tournament has been decorated by a handful of standout individual displays, setting the tone for what is shaping up to be a fiercely competitive tournament.
With improved conditions expected, players and supporters alike are eager to see which teams can sustain momentum and which underdogs may continue to defy expectations. At this point, the tournament is quite young, teams are more focused on topping their groups, with the format rewarding not only the top finishers but also those placing within the top eight, who will eventually earn additional playing opportunities in the upcoming Republic Bank Schools Football League.
Round Two represents a pivotal juncture. For some, it is about converting a strong start into a genuine title push; for others, it is a test of resilience as they fight to keep championship hopes alive. Coaches are expected to stress discipline, tactical awareness and composure under pressure as the margin for error narrows on the road to the knockout stages.
A full slate of matches is scheduled for today: Anna Regina Secondary will open proceedings against East Ruimveldt Secondary, followed by New Campbellville Secondary taking on Ann’s Grove Secondary in Match 18. Zeeburg Secondary will also face Yarrowkabra Secondary, while Charlestown Secondary meet New Amsterdam Secondary during the morning session.
The afternoon session features West Demerara Secondary against St Stanislaus College, Good Hope Secondary versus St John’s College, Santa Rosa Secondary opposing Brickdam Secondary, and West Ruimveldt Secondary seeking a second win when they clash with Hope Secondary in Match 24.
With 32 schools still in the hunt and the path to the final wide open, an electric atmosphere is expected as supporters return in full voice despite earlier weather setbacks.
Action continues Thursday, April 9, as well as April 11 and 12 at the Queen’s College Ground in Georgetown. Kickoff time 10:00am.
