Kaieteur Sports – At a time when Guyana is experiencing rapid economic and infrastructural transformation, the Petra Organisation continues to stand as a pillar of consistency and purpose, by preserving and advancing the nation’s proud tradition of grassroots football within the school system.
School’s football in Guyana date back more than eight decades, forming a vital part of youth development and community engagement. Today, that legacy is being carried forward with distinction by the Petra Organisation, which for over a decade has positioned itself as the leading force behind school-based football competitions.
Through its unwavering commitment, Petra has not only sustained the culture of youth football but has elevated it. The organisation has consistently demonstrated a clear understanding of the link between school tournaments and the holistic development of young athletes. By fostering tournaments that enforces; discipline, teamwork, and academic responsibility under its guiding motto, “Stay in School,”
Petra has created a model where sports and education go hand in hand.
A hallmark of this organisation has been its inclusivity factor. Petra tournaments cater to a wide range of age groups and have increasingly embraced gender diversity, bringing female football to the forefront. Competitions such as the Courts U11 Pee Wee Tournament, Republic Bank U18 Football, MVP Sports U11 Girls Tournament, the Boy’s and Girl’s ExxonMobil U14 Tournament, the ongoing Massy Distribution U18 Football Championship, and the Modec Tertiary Championship have become highly anticipated fixtures on the school’s calendar.

Flashback! Chase’s Academic Foundation lifting consecutive KFC titles …Eighty-six years later, even more schools experience the joy of participating in similar school-based competition.
These tournaments not only provide structured and competitive environments for young players but also serve as platforms for exposure and advancement. Many participants have gone on to represent Guyana on regional and sometimes even on international stages, including the prestigious KFC International Secondary Schools Series.
In the height of this, statistician Charwayne Walker has lauded the Petra Organisation for its invaluable contribution to youth football, noting that thousands of players have benefitted from the opportunity to showcase their talents in safe, organised settings. He emphasized that these initiatives provide recognition and pathways for growth, helping young athletes navigate both sport and life.
As Petra prepares to crown its latest champions in the Massy Distribution U18 tournament, there is also a moment of reflection. The journey of school football in Guyana stretches back to historic encounters such as the 1938 final, where St Mary’s triumphed over Queenstown RC—a team that featured the notable Wiltshire brothers, including Cedric, who went on to represent British Guiana.
Today, Petra Organisation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, continues to honour that legacy while shaping the future. Their shared commitment to the “Stay in School” initiative underscores the transformative power of sport as a vehicle for education, discipline, and national pride.
As anticipation builds for the 2026 champions, one thing remains certain: the Petra Organisation’s dedication to grassroots football will continue to inspire generations to come.
