(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh don’t trust everything you see on screen—especially when it come to them glossy fruit videos floating around on YouTube. You know the ones: slow-motion shots of golden pineapples, mangoes shining like they just came out a beauty pageant, bananas lined up like soldiers on parade. The camera angle sweet, the lighting perfect, and the vendor smiling like he giving away blessings for free.
Is pure temptation.
You watching the video and already planning your fruit salad. You could almost taste the sweetness through the phone. You telling yourself, “Today is the day I go eat healthy.” You even feeling like a new person—like if one slice of watermelon go wash away all your sins.
But wait… where is the price? The cameraman doing all kinda gymnastics—zoom in, zoom out, drone shot, close-up—but somehow the price tag missing like it owe somebody money. That is not by accident, you know. That is strategy. Because if them numbers show up on screen, half the viewers would faint before the video done.
Imagine you reach by the stall, still smiling from the video. You point at a banana. The vendor seh, “$500 a pound—Brazilian.” You pause. You look at the banana. The banana look back at you. For a moment, you wondering if it does sing or does grant wishes for that price. Bananas now so expensive, you can’t even slip on one peel again—too much investment gone to waste.
And don’t talk mango season. Five for $1000. Not ten, not eight—five. Them mangoes better come with Wi-Fi and a small data plan. Two little pineapples for $1000? Them pineapples so small, you need a magnifying glass to peel them.
Watermelon prices now ranging like a whole Chinese food -$1600 to $3000. You don’t buy watermelon anymore; you apply for it. “Sir, your loan for one slice has been approved.”
And yet, every speech you hearing is about “food security.” Well, we secure all right—secure from being able to afford it. So next time you see them pretty fruit videos, don’t just watch and drool. Ask the real question: “How much?” Because in Guyana today, the fruit might look sweet—but the price is what really bitter.
Talk half. Leff half.
