(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh Parliament is one place wha does always got lil noise. If yuh can’t tek a heckle, a sharp tongue or a desk knock now and again, yuh got no business calling yuhself an honourable member.
But yesterday was a different kettle of fish. Some people didn’t come fuh debate. Dem come with drama, like if Parliament suddenly turn into the National Cultural Centre and admission was free.
Now dem boys always believe politics got plenty theatre. A good speech need timing. A clever comeback deserve applause. Even a well-placed “Shame!” can brighten up a long sitting better than two cups of coffee.
But when the play become bigger than the purpose, something gone terribly wrong. Instead of discussing one of the greatest maritime tragedies this country has ever seen, some people decide the real emergency was making sure the cameras had enough excitement.
Dem boys seh if Oscar did give awards fuh parliamentary performances, yesterday had enough nominees to fill a whole red carpet. Best Dramatic Entrance. Best Finger Pointing. Best Supporting Shouting. And, of course, Lifetime Achievement in Interrupting Everybody.
Meanwhile, outside Parliament, families still waiting. Search and rescue still going on. A whole nation still mourning. But inside, some people behaving like if Standing Orders not standing.
One side seem determined to stop the debate before it start. The other side, instead of insisting on the discussion, get sucked into the performance until everybody forget what the sitting was bout.
Parliament is supposed to be where arguments wrestle, not where egos do high jump. The country’s problems don’t disappear because somebody shout louder or wave their arms harder.
At the end of the day, the loudest thing in the chamber wasn’t the truth. It was the noise. And dem boys seh, the only people who lose is the citizens who expected parliament to perform its duty instead of performing for the gallery.
Talk half. Leff half.
