Noise, ruckus and the silent sweep
(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh Parliament Monday had everything except a serious debate. It had shouting, chanting, waving, and plenty noise. Some people come to parliament with arguments; others come with a soundtrack.
From the moment the sitting started, the opposition side apparently decided that the speaker’s microphone was not loud enough, so they would provide their own amplification. Dem boys seh the place sound like a cricket match where the crowd forget the game done and still cheering for a wicket.
The intention was clear: create so much confusion that nobody could hear anything coming from the Government benches. The plan was to drown out the proceedings.
But dem boys seh somebody forgot to tell the Government side that they supposed to panic. Because while one side was busy making noise, the other side was busy making law.
Dem boys seh the Government walked into Parliament with a Plan B tucked away in its pocket. While the Opposition was performing “The Greatest Show in the Assembly,” the Government quietly moved ahead with the business of the House. Bills were brought forward, debated, and passed while the Opposition was busy conducting a choir practice without a conductor.
Imagine that! One side came armed with chants; the other side came armed with the Bills.
The Opposition thought they had discovered the parliamentary version of a blackout: if you turn off the lights, nobody can see what is happening. But dem boys seh the Government had a flashlight.
While the noise makers were busy trying to stop the train, they never realised the train had already left the station. By the time they finished shouting, the legislative luggage was already loaded and the engine was moving.
Dem boys seh politics does be like a game of cricket. One team could be making plenty noise at the boundary, waving flags and shouting at the batsman, but if they forget to watch the scoreboard, they might discover that while they were entertaining themselves, the runs were piling up.
And that is the joke of Monday’s performance. The Opposition wanted to show that it could bring Parliament to a standstill. Instead, it may have shown that it could bring only itself to a standstill.
Dem boys seh sometimes the loudest person in the room is not the one winning the argument. Sometimes the person quietly doing the work while everybody else making noise is the one walking away with the victory.
So, the big question after Monday is simple: who really got the last laugh?
