Overseas based Guyanese Hall of famer and awardee to stage Female Inter School Cricket competition in New Amsterdam

Kaieteur Sports – Not many remember where they come from, but not so Petula Angela Samuels-Felicien, better known as “Petal Samuels”. Samuels a native of New Amsterdam has been living in the United States for a number of years.
Ms. Samuels’s achievements shows that she has a long and outstanding career in the area of Sports and Sports administration.
Her ability and desire have pushed her to stage a tournament for schools in her native New Amsterdam. The schools down to participate are Berbice High School, New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary, Berbice Educational Institute, Tutorial Academy Secondary and Vryman’s Erven Secondary.

The Competition is set for June 12-14 and will be played on a T10 bias.

Ms. Samuels has had an outstanding career in cricket involvement. She is the founder and president of Georgia Women Cricket Association (GWCA) and Atlanta Pearls Women’s Cricket team. Ms. Samuels is a competent cricketer, certified West Indies Cricket Umpire and a certified Level 1 Cricket Australia coach.
Samuels was a go getter since her early childhood days back in Guyana, where her love for sports began. She is a multitalented athlete where she was active throughout her student life, especially in football and cricket.
According to Samuels, the GWCA focuses on developing cricketers to their fullest potential, while providing a platform to showcase their talents and skills. It is about using cricket to transcend racial, economic and social barriers.
The goal being, spurring the development of women’s cricket in the USA and now in Guyana. Over the years she has organised cricket development camps, coaching clinics and tournaments in the USA. Her latest venture is the Georgia Women’s Annual T20 Cricket Tournament.
She wants to use her talent and experience gained over the years to do the same back home in Guyana.
According to Samuels her desire to get into this venture began back in 2010, after participating in a tournament in Florida, at the end of which there was no word on when and where the next tournament would be held.
That is when she decided to organize a tournament the following year in Atlanta and has been doing so since. To date teams from New Jersey, New York, Cayman Islands, Canada, Belize, Bermuda and Atlanta have showcased their talents during the annual Memorial Day weekend in Georgia. She is hoping that a Guyana team could participate soon.
National Cricketers from as far as Zimbabwe, India, Ghana and the West Indies have participated in the tournament.
A number of West Indies and other international female cricketers have participated in the tournament over the years, including Guyanese Tremayne Smartt, Subrina Monroe and Hema Singh among others.
Her experience has taken her places. She managed a male cricket team in Georgia, which was groundbreaking and a tribute to and recognition of her exceptional knowledge of the game, and her human relations and organizational skills.
Over the years she has conducted training and coaching sessions with a number of school and other organization in the USA, where hundreds have been introduced to the sport.
In 2015 she was inducted into the Cricket Hall of Fame in Hartford, CT. In March 2016 she was honoured by the Georgia House of Representatives for her work in promoting youth and women’s cricket. She was presented with a Resolution of Dedication by Georgia State Representative Valencia Stovall, at a ceremony held at the Georgia State Capitol.
Earlier that month, Mayor David Lockhart of the City of Forest Park, declared March 8, 2016 as “Petula Samuels Day.” She was also presented with a proclamation by the Mayor.
Samuels is a proud mother of three. She comes from a family of multitalented sports personalities. She is the sister of former National Rugby Star and multitalented athlete Colvis Samuels.
