Kaieteur Sports – Twenty-eight students from Hope Secondary School took a significant step into the world of golf on Friday as they traveled to the Nexgen Golf Academy for an engaging training session led by Master Coach Aleem Hussain and LPGA Girls Site Director Philip Haynes.
The visit marked an important milestone for the school, as the students represent the first group from Hope Secondary to pursue golf as their CSEC Physical Education elective.

Students of the Hope Secondary School spent some time with instructors recently at the Nexgen Golf Academy.
Notably, the programme has seen a strong increase in female participation in 2026, with the ratio of girls to boys rising significantly—an encouraging sign for the continued growth of the sport among young women.
During the session, students were introduced to the fundamentals of the game through hands-on instruction in driving, chipping, and putting.
Coaches worked closely with the participants, providing detailed guidance on technique, posture, and course awareness. The experience concluded with a friendly team competition that allowed the students to put their new skills to the test.
The initiative forms part of the broader national golf development programme launched in 2021 by the Guyana Golf Association in collaboration with Nexgen Golf Academy and the Westside Golf Course, in partnership with the Ministry of Education.
Since its inception, the programme has made remarkable strides in expanding access to the sport across the country.
To date, more than 27,000 individuals have been introduced to golf through school visits, community programmes, and structured training sessions.
Additionally, nearly 1,000 students have selected golf as their Physical Education elective at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) level, demonstrating the sport’s growing popularity among young people.
Officials from the Guyana Golf Association noted that the success of the programme has been made possible through generous sponsorships and donations from both local and international supporters who share a commitment to youth development, education, and sport.
For the students of Hope Secondary School, Friday’s session offered more than just a day of fun and learning, it provided a glimpse into opportunities that golf can create, from academic pathways and scholarships to personal development and international exposure.
