Kaieteur Sports – An International Masters Football Tournament has been fixed for the GFC Ground, Bourda to be part of Mashramani Celebrations and will be staged on Thursday February 19th and Friday 20th.
The tournament is the brainchild of former Thomas United midfielder and businessman Paul D’Anrade of Kaikan Street, North Ruimveldt. It has also received the blessing of the Office of His Excellency, President Irfaan Ali under the One Guyana sports initiative.
D’Anrade will be honouring 50 veteran footballers and or administrators for their contribution to local football over the years.
The tournament will feature Pele masters out of Brooklyn New York and the T and T X-men from Trinidad alongside masters teams from Linden, Bartica, Berbice and Georgetown.
The match schedule will see action commence from 2:00pm with NTC vs Bartica in an over-40 clash, while to follow at 3:00pm is and Over50 contest between NCT and GFC. At 4:00pm is GDF vs Beacons (O-40) and Pele play Thomas United at 5:00pm (O-50).
Competition continues the next day (Friday 20) with T and T X-Men vs GFC, Linden Masters vs Thomas United, NTC vs GFC and T and T X-Men vs GFC.
The Best goalkeeper trophy has been sponsored by former Pele FC goalkeeper, Anthony Beresford, who is proudly giving back to the game that made him a national ambassador.
Beresford was the Guyana Captain at the 1978 Inter Guiana Games vs Suriname. He was also the captain in 1979 when Guyana Under-19 played Trinidad and Tobago in two CFU eliminators and he also toured with Pele to Brazil in 1980 and to Aruba for CFU club championship in 1978 and also Suriname.
