Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has wrapped up its inquiry into concerns raised by several domestic players of the Golden Jaguars senior men’s national team, following contentious comments made by Head Coach Thomas Dooley during a recent team meeting.
But while the Federation detailed the findings of its investigation, what happens next was one major element that remained unclear.
In its statement, the GFF confirmed that it interviewed domestic players, members of the technical staff, and Dooley himself.
The locally-based players reported feeling “disrespected and embarrassed” after the coach compared local players to their overseas-based counterparts, drawing attention to issues of professionalism, conduct, and performance standards.
According to the players, such comments should never have been made publicly, especially in front of the foreign-based contingent.
The inquiry also highlighted that Dooley had implemented new rules intended to strengthen discipline and unity within the squad. These included bans on mobile phones during meals and technical meetings and stricter guidelines for dress and player conduct during official activities.
Several breaches reportedly occurred, prompting Dooley to convene a meeting to address the growing concerns over discipline.
Players and staff acknowledged that the coach displayed frustration during that session, though they did not believe his intention was to insult anyone.
After domestic players expressed their dissatisfaction, Dooley met with them separately, where they explained how the comments had affected morale.
The coach clarified that his remarks were meant to reinforce professional standards rather than demean local players. The matter, according to the GFF, was resolved amicably.
The team went on to demonstrate renewed unity, reflected in their dominant 4–1 victory over Antigua and Barbuda in the inaugural Concacaf Series.
The GFF noted that international staff often face challenges in adapting to the cultural dynamics of a squad composed of players from diverse backgrounds and environments.
The federation expressed regret that the episode overshadowed a strong on-field performance and restated its commitment to fostering a disciplined, ambitious national-team culture.
However, despite outlining what happened, the GFF provided no indication of the next steps. Whether any further action, oversight, or policy adjustments will follow remains unknown, stakeholders, and even some players wondering how the federation intends to prevent similar issues going forward.
