Kaieteur Sports – As Guyana prepares to kick off its longest-running international indoor hockey championship, the Diamond Mineral Water Indoor Championship, the nation also celebrates a milestone of profound significance.
This year marks 50 years since the historic Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) first opened its doors, becoming the home of countless local and international sporting events according to information by Statistician Charwayne Walker.
It would be remiss not to reflect on the extraordinary figure whose name the facility proudly bears—Cliff Anderson, one of Guyana’s most prolific boxers of the 1940s. Known widely as the “Guyanese Tiger” or the “Dusky Thunderbolt,” Anderson embodied the perfect blend of strength, agility, and strategic brilliance.
Weighing just about 61.23 kg, he carved an indelible legacy in British boxing, competing fearlessly against elite opponents. His most memorable bout came in 1947, when he faced British fighter Joe Louis for the heavyweight title. Their clash lasted an intense ten rounds and concluded in a hard-fought draw, an achievement that elevated Anderson’s status on the international stage. Over his 13-year career, he appeared in 88 international matches, cementing his place in boxing history.
The facility was built for growth, and still delivering today. Commissioned in 1975, the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall was Guyana’s first-ever indoor sports facility, established to expand and strengthen the country’s sports development framework.
The venue opened on November 24, 1975, with the Chinese National Basketball Team becoming the first international team to compete on this iconic court. Five decades later, CASH has not only lived up to its purpose, it has far exceeded expectations, serving as a central hub for athletic growth and high-level competition.
As the Diamond Mineral Water Festival gears up for its 20th edition, it is fitting to recall the true origins of indoor hockey at this iconic venue.
Guyana hosted its first-ever indoor hockey tournament in August 1976, with Cliff Anderson Sports Hall as the historic battleground. The tournament concluded with Le Manns Hockey Club securing the inaugural title, setting the stage for what would become a longstanding hockey tradition in the country.
According to Walker in one of the opening games GFC beat GCC by 7 goals to one with the late Simeon Andrews netting 4 goals and Compton DeSouza 3 for GFC. The late Conrad Plummer was GCC’s lone goal scorer. Cosmos also defeated Queen’s College by 8 goals to two margin. Frank Chin netted 5 goals for Cosmos, while Jeremy Roberts scored a double and M. Plummer one.
Police Sports Club defeated Mackenzie Sports Club 5 goals to 2. The marksmen for the lawmen were Cecil Glasgow, Cecil Skip Roberts, Junior Ross, M. Layne and M. Smith. While Winsley Doris and Basil McLean netted for Mackenzie Sports Club.
Today, as the Guyana Hockey Board prepares to swing off another thrilling edition of international championship, the sport continues to flourish, reflecting the broader development seen across several sporting disciplines in Guyana.
Meanwhile, as the Diamond Mineral Water Indoor Championship commences, the nation proudly celebrates both the growth of hockey and the enduring legacy of the venue that helped make it possible. Cliff Anderson Sports Hall—50 years of championing indoor sports, nurturing talent, and preserving a rich legacy of athletic excellence.
