Kaieteur News – The final preparations for the 2026 Winfield Braithwaite Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing Championships will intensify tomorrow, Thursday morning, when boxers from across the region assemble at the Tower Hotel for the official weigh-in ahead of the three-day tournament.
The weigh-in is scheduled for 7:00 am on Thursday, August 20, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, where the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) will host the championships from August 20–22.
Guyana will welcome young boxers from St. Maarten, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia and The Bahamas with the regional contingents expected to battle for honours across the various schoolboys and junior weight divisions.
The championship, which has become one of the Caribbean’s leading developmental boxing competitions, was conceptualised and first hosted in Guyana in 2016. It is named in honour of Winfield Braithwaite, Guyana’s 1978 Commonwealth Games gold medallist.
GBA President Steve Ninvalle has welcomed the strong regional response to this year’s championships, describing the competition as an important component of the continued development of amateur boxing in the Caribbean.
He added that the tournament has provided young fighters with an important platform to gain international experience while testing themselves against opponents from across the region.
“Over the years, it has provided our young boxers with invaluable international exposure and has become one of the region’s premier developmental competitions,” Ninvalle said.
The official weigh-in will be particularly important as fighters must satisfy the requirements of their respective weight divisions before the competition gets underway. It will also provide coaches and team officials with the opportunity to complete the final administrative preparations ahead of the opening bouts.
The GBA has been working to ensure that all organisational arrangements are in place for the championships, with Ninvalle expressing confidence that Guyana will once again deliver a successful staging of the regional tournament.
The competition’s significance extends beyond the medals and regional bragging rights. Since its inception, the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing Championships has developed a reputation as an important stepping stone for young fighters aspiring to compete at the highest levels of amateur boxing.
A number of boxers who have used the tournament as an early international platform have subsequently progressed to represent their countries at major events, including the Olympic Games and World Championships.
