Kaieteur Sports – The Petra Organisation, in collaboration with MVP Sports, has officially launched the 2025 edition of the Girls’ Under-11 Schools’ Football Tournament, a vibrant platform designed to empower young female footballers and strengthen grassroots development across Guyana.
The simple but significant sponsorship presentation was held yesterday, Thursday at the MVP Sports store in Giftland Mall, where Petra Co-Director Troy Mendonca and MVP Sports CEO Ian Ramdeo unveiled details of the upcoming competition.
The tournament is set to kick off on November 15 and will run until December 7 at the Ministry of Education Ground, featuring sixteen primary school teams. Over the four-week period, these talented young athletes will compete for a place in the ultimate Girls’ Under-11 final.
Prizes for the tournament include $100,000 to $75,000 worth of equipment for the top teams, as well as individual awards for Best Goalkeeper and Highest Goal Scorer.
Speaking at the launch, Troy Mendonca emphasized the tournament’s vital role in providing consistent opportunities for young girls to participate in organised football.
“We’ve seen the direction female football has been heading, both at the CONCACAF level down to the GFA level,” Mendonca said. “Over the years, girls’ football hasn’t attracted the kind of support it truly needs. With MVP Sports’ backing, we’ve been able to host a steadily growing Under-11 tournament but there’s still so much potential to be realized. We’re committed to ensuring these young players have a safe and supportive environment to showcase their talent.”

Mendonca also noted that Petra recently completed child-protection training for coaches, ensuring that participants benefit from a secure and developmental atmosphere throughout the tournament.
Echoing this commitment, MVP Sports CEO Ian Ramdeo reaffirmed his company’s passion for advancing female participation in sports.
“This is our third or fourth year sponsoring this tournament, and we’ve seen firsthand how much it means to these young athletes,” Ramdeo said. “Guyana has incredible talent but what we need more of, are opportunities for these players. Local tournaments like this one are stepping stones toward regional and even international competition. They help build better athletes, stronger teams, and more confident individuals.”
Ramdeo added that MVP Sports remains committed to supporting the Petra Organisation’s broader initiatives, emphasizing that tournaments like this are key to fostering teamwork, communication, and personal growth among young players.
Meanwhile, with the successful conclusion of the Boys’ edition last weekend, the spotlight now turns to the girls. The tournament continues to see remarkable growth, nearly doubling in participation since its inception, a testament to the expanding enthusiasm for female football in Guyana.
As the countdown begins to November 15, both Petra and MVP Sports are optimistic that this year’s event will not only highlight the skill and spirit of the next generation of female footballers but also continue to strengthen the foundation for women’s sports development nationwide.
