Kaieteur Sports – Linden clubs Victory Valley Royals and Amelia’s Ward Jets are through to the semifinals of the Brusches Classic basketball tournament which began in Linden last Saturday and Sunday.
In the opening night’s matches Saturday at the Retrieve Hard Court, Retrieve Raiders scored an exciting 50-47 points win over Central Mackenzie Kings, and Kwakwani hammered their way past D-Up Academy, 95-50.
The following night at the same venue the first game saw Victory Valley Royals whipping Retrieve Raiders, 84-42.
The Royals were always in control of this encounter as they jumped to a 21-6 opening lead and by the half way mark, were leading 35-13.
They maintained their hold by being ahead at the end of the third segment and cruised home winners 84-42, as Vibert Benjamin led a balanced scoring attack with 20 points. Clauvel Thomas got 28, Rakin McDonald scored 15 and Shemar Henry added 14.
Neil Marks Jr. with 23 points was the top scorer for Raiders and teammate John Anthony contributed seven points.
Amelia’s Ward Jets then staved off the challenge of Block 22 Flames 53-47.
The Jets led 11-10, when the first segment came to a close, and Flames were able to counter the scoring with a 18-12 advantage to be ahead, 28-23, at half time.

However, Jets rebounded to take advantage when the third period ended 39-35, in their favour and they outscored Flames in that final quarter by a basket 14-12, to romp home winners 53-47, and book a place in the semifinals.
Stephen George with 12 points was the Jets lead scorer was Donnell Benjamin. He was ably supported by Shannon George and Quincy Easton as they both hit in eight points.
Last Saturday night Retrieve Raiders knocked out Central Mackenzie Kings 50-47, as John Anthony had 22 points and Alfie Robertson added six points, while for the Kings, Paul France top scored with 17 points.
The other game saw Kwakwani demolishing D-Up Academy out of West Demerara, 95-50.
The Kwakwani side were never threatened and were leading at the end of the first period, 21-15.
By half time they were cruising 48-24.
The Kwakwani unit accelerated their grip 34-10 through the third session to have a 82-34 advantage going into the final period when they eased the pressure to come out winners 95-50.
Two more matches are tentatively slated for this evening (Wednesday) in Georgetown as Ravens collide with Kwakwani in one game and the other features Pacesetters and Eagles.
If no venue is available the matches will be played tonight at the Retrieve Hard Court according to the Brusches Basketball Foundation, organizers of the annual tournament.
This year’s competition concludes this weekend with semifinals set for Saturday and the final on Sunday at the Retrieve Hard Court in Linden.
