Several key stakeholders gathered at the Sport Hall on Tuesday to roll off YBG’s Introduction Coaching Workshop. Present were (seated) YBG’s co-director, Chris Bowman, along with MoE rep. Dacia Cummings, Louisiana State coach Daniel Lafont (center), Manoj Yadav and Willon Cameron.
(Kaieteur News) – Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG), together with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, successfully hosted its Introduction Basketball Coaching Workshop on Tuesday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. This initiative was made possible through generous sponsorship support from G-Boats Inc., reflecting a shared commitment to fostering sustainable youth development through sport at the grassroots level.
Rooted in a developmental approach, the workshop focused on empowering educators, coaches, and school stakeholders from various regions across Guyana. It exemplifies YBG’s ongoing dedication to strengthening grassroots basketball infrastructure by building the capacity of teachers and school-based coaches, two key agents in nurturing young talent and promoting holistic youth development within the education system.

Coach Daniel Lafont of Louisiana (with ball) had the pleasure of sharing a few pointers with a few local coaches during Tuesday’s developmental workshop at CASH.
The programme featured interactive sessions led by esteemed coaches, including Coach Daniel LaFont from Louisiana, Coach Willon Cameron of President’s College, and Manoj Yadav of the Georgetown International Academy. These sessions provided foundational coaching principles, basketball philosophy, and practical strategies tailored to the needs of school environments. Emphasizing the true importance of fundamental skills, discipline, and development-centered coaching, the workshop aimed to cultivate a growth mindset among educators and foster sustainable sports practices at the community level.
Special remarks from Ms. Dacia Cummings, representing the Unit of Allied Arts within the Ministry of Education, highlighted the vital role of sport in youth development and leadership within the broader educational framework. She encouraged teachers and coaches to leverage basketball as a powerful tool for positive student engagement, character building, and holistic growth which also aligns with YBG’s philosophy of using sport as a catalyst for societal development.
