Kaieteur Sports – Carr Tec Sport Club and Better-Hope have advanced to the 2025 Ontario Masters Softball Cricket Clubs (OMSCC) Over-40, T20 final after both teams recorded contrasting victories in semi-final fixtures last Sunday.
At Littles in Scarborough, Carr Tec Sport Club beat Reliance Lions by 8 wickets while on the adjacent St. Bedes field, Better-Hope got the better of Masters by a thrilling, 5-wicket margin.
The two teams will now meet up on Sunday, September 7 also at St. Bedes for the championship encounter.
After winning the toss and opted to take first strike, Reliance Lions roared to a respectable 210-5 at the expiration of the 20-overs but Carr Tec Sport Club surpassed the target with a solitary over remaining.
Their batting effort was spearheaded by an unbroken, 134-run fourth-wicket stand between Eion Katchay and skipper Trophy Gobin.
Katchay struck 55 while Gobin contributed an invaluable 54. The pair received outstanding support from Rovendra ‘Prince’ Mandolall with 43.
Their chase began shaky though with the early dismissal of Rawl Scott for 09 and soon after Safraz Abjal (01) joining him back to the pavilion at 42-2.
However, the former Guyana and Canada player Katchay and Mandolall repaired the damage before Mandolall departed with 77 on the board.
Gobin, like Katchay and Mandolall also represented Guyana at the youth level, ensured there was no more fuss as they reached 99-3 in the 10th over and then ultimately sealed the deal.
Katchay slammed four sixes and three fours while Gobin, another right-hander, belted four sixes as well and tucked away two boundaries.
Mandolall also batted with a great degree of aggression spanking four sixes and smote three fours.
Earlier, high-ranked softball player Richard Latif constructed a pulsating 88 not out to lead the way for the Lions.
The right-handed Latif clobbered seven sixes and knocked three fours.
He lost his opening partner Morrison Edwards (14) quickly. Reliance Lions further slipped to 88-4 before Raja Pooran, an ex-Guyana youth player, linked up with Latif and they two prospered in an enterprising, 132-run stand.
Pooran’s innings of 53 not out was characterized with seven effortless sixes and a four from 15 balls.
Katchay complemented a fine, all-round performance by picking up two wickets but he conceded 28 runs in his two-over spell.
Better-Hope won the toss and invited Masters to take first strike.
They rallied along to a decent 130-6 from the allotment of 20-overs while Better-Hope responded with 131-5 with 8 balls to spare.
Experienced batter Looknauth Ramsuchit batted responsibly to lead the reply with an unbeaten 37.
He got good support from opener Azam Haniff who hit a solid 28 as Andy Persaud grabbed 2-11 from three frugal overs.
When Masters batted, they struggled for early impetus as Hemnarine Chattergoon (02) was run-out and their big-batter Richard Driffield and Anand Balwant having returned quickly for 8 and 6 respectively.
Veteran batsman Yadram ‘Bogh’ Lara stabilized things though with a steady, unbeaten 37 which comprised of two sixes and two fours while opening batsman Sheik Khan scored 37.
