Avi Dhanpaul’s hat-trick, Chanderpaul Persaud’s half-century guide West Coast Warriors to victory

Kaieteur Sports – A hat-trick bowling performance from off-spinner and US-based Guyanese Avi Dhanpaul and a responsible half-century from opening batsman Chanderpaul Persaud guided West Coast Warriors to a thrilling, two-wicket triumph over NYC Eagles on Sunday in the continuation of the 2025 New York National Cricket League 30-over competition.
At a scenic Cunningham Park in the ‘Big-Apple’, Dhanpaul finished with 4-38 from his maximum six overs to help dismiss Eagles for a challenging 172 in exactly 30-overs.
The left-handed Persaud then led the way with an attractive 54 which contained seven delightful fours and a six during his 36-ball show as Warriors surpassed the target in the penultimate over.
The historic figure for Dhanpaul is second by a Warriors’ player joining Rajin Rahoman, who also created history in 2023 versus Amazon Jaguars.
After winning the toss and opted to take first knock, Eagles started off proceedings with a solid, 46-run opening stand between Jaspaul Jaikaran and Ansar Khan.
Khan batted with a great degree of aggression scoring 36 while Jaikaran contributed 29.
Skipper and ex-Guyana first-class opening batsman Sudesh Dhaniram kept things going nicely and eventually top-scored with 42 (5×4, 1×6) batting at that pivotal number 3 position.
They were 111-1 in the 18th over before a plethora of wickets fell, thanks mainly to the intervention of Dhanpaul, who featured for Demerara at Inter-County cricket in Guyana.
Wahid Ward was lacking support but added 21 runs having clobbered two effortless sixes.
Leggy Brandon Cabose and right-arm seamer Javid Shafeek supported Dhanpaul with 2-27 (5) and 2-29 (6) respectively.
Warriors, who remained at the top of the points standing, lost Yougshire Bachan early for just 4 but Persaud and Captain Kevin Christian quickly restored the innings with a remarkable, 68-run second-wicket partnership.
Christian, the former Guyana youth player, is having an unforgettable season with 677 runs inclusive of a hundred (136) and five half-centuries. He was leg-before for 21 on this occasion.
His departure triggered a dramatic collapse for Warriors before Anthony Providence slammed a fiery 29.
Shafeek controlled the innings with an unbeaten 19 and associated in a vital, 38-run six-wicket stand with Vaickesh Dhaniram who scored a measurable 23.
Seamer Vijay Persaud finished with 2-29 from his six tidy overs while off-spinner Moonsammy Veerasammy also accounted for two victims but he conceded 40 runs from 5.5 overs.
Meanwhile, the 16-team competition is slated to continue on Sunday with eight more matches playing simultaneously.
Warriors, last year’s runners-up team, will clash with Trini Boys while NYC Eagles will tackle Tricounty Cricket Club.
Warriors have now got 11 wins from 13 games.
The competition will wrap up September 14 with the grand finale.
