Kaieteur Sports – Chris Macey’s late second-half strike sealed a 2–0 victory for the Guyana Defence Force Football Club (GDF) over St. Paul’s United Strikers, in their opening Group B clash of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield yesterday at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago.
Veteran defender Colin Nelson broke the deadlock just before the interval, confidently dispatching a penalty to give the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League champions a 1–0 lead at halftime.
The match began cautiously, with both sides testing each other and struggling to find rhythm in the middle third.
GDF, however, looked the more threatening going forward, with Chris Macey and Trayon Bobb consistently pressing the St. Paul’s backline.
The breakthrough came late in the first half after Bobb dazzled his way into the box, where his attempt on goal struck the arm of a St. Paul’s defender.
The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Nelson stepped up and made no mistake, calmly placing the ball past the goalkeeper.
The second half mirrored the first in its early moments, but GDF Head Coach Joseph “Bill” Wilson made key substitutions and tactical adjustments that changed the tempo of the game.
GDF began to show more attacking intent, dominating possession and creating opportunities in the final third.
Despite losing captain Colin Nelson to injury midway through the half, GDF held firm defensively, frustrating St. Paul’s and launching several dangerous counterattacks.
Macey, who had been a constant menace on the left flank, finally got his reward late in the match. Picking up the ball deep in his own half, he embarked on a surging run down the wing.
The St. Kitts and Nevis side failed to close down the space, allowing Macey to cut inside and curl a superb left-footed strike into the back of the net.
The final whistle brought relief and celebration for GDF, who collected three valuable points, a stark contrast to last year’s campaign, where they exited the tournament winless in the group stage.
GDF will now turn their attention to their second Group B fixture against Moca FC of the Dominican Republic, scheduled for Monday at 4:00 p.m.
